I did have that happen in the campaign just yesterday ( it was an away mission - beta 4, so I was pretty sure that I hadn't lost my command center). Saving the game and reloading restored the map.

No, I'm not sure, and it's certainly possible I did that by mistake. If I did so, though, it's the first time I ever have. (Besides, I'd have had to save and exit to get back to the key mappings anyways).
