phpBB's features of these kinds are always unreliable. The only ones you can really trust are "View your posts" and "View unread posts" (the latter of which is currently deactivated). I use "View new posts", which is mostly reliable, but you can never be sure what counts as "since the last visit".
"View new posts" works pretty reliable for me, shows everything new since the last visit (where each visit has a timeout of an hour or so, so if you click again before that is over, you'll get everything you got last time plus new stuff, and the timeout is reset).
Active topics seem to be activity based, not time based. Time based view is missing, other forums usually have "last 24 hours" or "recent topics".
After a more thorough review on multiple rigs, various OS's & web browsers, logged-in or logged-out (makes no diff really) but both the "Active Topics" & "New Posts" sorts are NON-Inclusive which in essence makes their intended funtionality worthless.... This may or may not matter to most. In any case, that concludes my investment on the matter.

Thanks for the response, Buggy.
Coulda swore I saw Kamaze post elsewhere after this thread had been up a couple days. No biggie... he may have just missed this topic and will see it when he gets back and look into it.
Well, last time I talked to him on IRC, he was studying up for some exams. Haven't heard anything from him since then, so I assume he isn't done with them yet.
all active topic & post sorts remain worse than worthless - they're downright misleading. if they can't be fixed they should be disabled. allowing functions that mislead forum users is obtuse at best, imo.
I'm always watching I'm just somewhat busy right now and also handicapped. The only PC I have full access to, is my Netbook which isn't fun to work on. As soon as I wrote all exams and have my desktop back I'll investigate.
We all have the same heaven, but not the same horizon.

understood. my bad, forgot to use my esp to detect your omnipresence & new data assimilation.
Zarel wrote:"View unanswered posts", "View new posts", and "View your posts" all seem fine to me - it's just "active topics" that's weird.
And we have to wait for Kamaze to remove those links, anyway, and once he gets back he might as well just fix it...
i only named 2 sorts. "active topics" - totally weird, indeed. and "view new posts" - let me clarify that one. the time criteria for the sort is way, way, too short - like a couple hours from initiation. to be useful, like it was in the past for years, it should cover a few days. 'nuff said.
Right. A "newest posts" that just lists all posts from a (ideally configurable) period (like "view new posts" when logged in) would be very appreciated.

Works fine here, when I use it after a week not being logged in, I get all new posts from that week. I have a problem on another forum, there I have to log out explicitly after reading, and log in again before using "new posts", or the act of loading the page resets the "new posts" counter... Maybe that works for you here.

that gave me an idea.
i longed in and got a 24 page (477) "new posts" sort. read a couple. logged out, then logged in again, ran "new posts" sort and got "no suitable matches found". guess you gotta read em all in that one session or your plumb outta luck because the sort is tied to your nick and not solely the calender. that is because the function is not available to guests anymore were a simple straight forward calender sort would be the routine. hmmm. perhaps it's a matter of taste but I find this function for guests sorted to calender alone more elegant and useful.
