Mech propulsion?

Post by Emdek »

Maybe there could be added new propulsion, inspired by mechs from Earth 2150, that could be for example hexapod? It could be more advanced and fast (but having less HP) propulsion for land only.
I think that there is need to add that king of futuristic technology because tracks and wheels are very classic.
What do you think?

Mechs just plain don't make sense in warfare: cool for movies and cartoons, but just stupid for warfare.
Really big profile, easy to see, easy to hit...

Tanks are all rather low to the ground and "squat".
In modern warfare, detection is destruction, and its really hard for a mech to hide.

They would have nothing like hull down position that tanks have.

Unless of course these mechs would go prone like soldiers do once engaging in combat... in which case they should have tracks or wheels on their bellies to allow them mobility while casting a low profile - and you are back to a tank, with dead weight in the form of "legs".

Due to scaling laws, you couldnt have something with legs out sideways likea cockroach that can keep its body close to the ground, its legs would need to be in a erect/pillar layout.
I suppose a quadruped or hexapod mech might be able to scale hillsides a tank couldn't, and get past tank traps, but then you'd just construct "triplines" above your tank traps.
Not to mention you'd now have to have much better belly armor (in a quad-hexa pod mech), making the thing even heavier than a tank of similar capabilities (tanks have really weak under armor, relatively speaking, because they'll basically never get hit there by an attack, though a defensive mine might get them...

Yes, that's true... mechs are only effective when very mobile or when they have very much coverage...

They are epic, but I think that they wouldn't fit on WZ...

Yeah, I must agree. They would need some good advantages, biggest mobility maybe is enough. Last propulsion available after getting super cyborgs and and some heavy bodies.

I don't know what is wrong with taking some inspiration from other. And maybe in fact they are harder to fit with Warzone climate, but it could be at lest tried...

I think legged propulsion was discussed in another topic... It was suggested that legged propulsion would be able to climb impassable terrain, but have extremely low armor bonuses.

Here is the rest:Leg Propulsion - A new approach.
"There is no greater Void than the one between your ears." - Void Ray, StarCraft 2.
Especially the Void between the ears of people who think that No VTOL is a good idea, and won't lead to arty wars. I've won one, and I have to say: I hated it.

Personally I like more design from first topic, but at least there is progress in second. ;-)
