strategy games are not upto standard

Post by MIKEYPEZZA »

Ok i find turn based games boring and time consuming.
I like the basic ideas of warzone 2100. Command and conquor and ONLY the concept of age of civilisations.
I either don't know of a game that fullfills my needs or it simply hasn't been made.
I wish there was a real time based game, where you went through the ages of time from medieval to modern era, with a hugeeeee maped world with newly forming empires and ever changing alliance.
The issue is the detail i seek. There are so many things besides differant weapons to emphesise on. Like a tough spartan like society at the begining would result in a gernerally biologically superior race.
Alot of these ideas could be assimilated or adapted from sim city (social complexes and structures) in comparison to military guarding and locations. I guess the theme sounds like a sort of God like ruling figure taxing and persuing technologies that would counter neighbouring countries.

Look at the crazy database within football manager, surely this is is possible.

The reviews i'v read have said its recieved fewer positive reviews than its predessesors and has less epochs though. It doesn't look like a cross between sim city :)

The most modern RTS that really appealed to my gameplay style was Supreme Commander (the expansion irons out the bugs).

I have to say, I love the game, but I wouldn't say it's flawless. It really appeals to specific people, it's not an RTS anyone can play.

C&C is getting stale, actually to be honest, I never really cared for the games in general. The whole construction yard concept is eh to me, I like having more base-building freedom. In a sense I only moderatly enjoyed Generals...to bad it was glitchy and unfinished.

I passionately hate the Red Alert series, mainly 2 and 3...communist wanking, ugh. And 2 and 3 are soooo clownish.

Dawn of War...not my type of game, it's good, but I find it obnoxious and wanky. I only played Soulstorm. I prefer strategy on a larger scale than real close up stuff. I also found the balance in that game annoying, I would always have the wrong weapons for the wrong time, and I felt a lot of weapons were underpowered...with some sides being underpowered, like the Sisters of Battle. Honestly too many Flame-exclusive weapons sounds cool in theory but in practice it limits their use, and the meltas are just not as efficient as other anti-tank weapons.

Also the aircraft in Soulstorm seemed really slapped-on for lack of a better term, but seeing as there were mods to remove aircraft I wasn't the only one to recognize that. Seemed all previous ones had no aircraft. The aircraft also weren't that effective to be honest.

Only other RTS I play is Empire at War: Forces of Corruption...and ONLY with the Phoenix Rising mod, otherwise the game is a pile of garbage. Admittedly if I wasn't such a hardcore old school Star Wars fan I wouldn't care about it. It's an exception to the rule with me when it comes to RTS games, it caters to the Star Wars lover in me who likes the classic Expanded Universe.

All in all though, the mod makes it a better game even from a neutral perspective.

Consider the original Rise of Nations, it plays like a refined version of Age of Empires in multiple eras, with city-building and the possibility of a lesser army defeating a larger army with realistic tactics.

It also has a mode that resembles a global Diplomacy board.

To get back to the original post in this topic I must admit that I do very much like a good play-by-turn game. Its the sort of principle that drove games like Front Mission, FF Tactics, or Star Ocean (and a lot of RPGs come to think of it, if you discount freedom of movement).

I personally feel that such Turn-based strategy games permit a player to take control of a much vaster or more detailed handling than he or she would otherwise be able to handle with present available technology. This is why the vast majority of fast-paced games tend to involve a significant restriction in player focus - such as first person shoot-em-ups (Armored Core comes to mind).

An efficient GUI and an appropriate game pace are essential to a game's success. If the gameplay is too intense for a GUI to handle then the User's ability to play the game suffers.

I liked Red Alert because it made me feel good to turtle up and go to sleep while the poor AI got smashed on the defenses ;c) Ukraine of course. Also liked the kick-a-- intro. Retaliation's intro was a bit of a let-down and mostly more of the same. I liked Red Alert 2 though as well as Yuri's revenge - Too bad the disk stopped working.
