Redoing the portuguese translation

Post by Crushy »

I've been thinking of doing something for this project, since I've been meaning to work my way into an open source project lately (give back to the community so to speak). Anyway I have a decent grasp of C and I've been meaning to learn how to model but in the meantime I decided I might as well do something simple like translate Warzone to my native tongue.

Well I was surprised to see it had already been done, there's only one problem:

"Enemy scavangers aproaching our base" has been translated as
"Invasores Escavadores estão se aproximando de nossa base."

Which roughly means: "Invading diggers are approaching our base"

Now this is only a sample, there's quite a few minor things such as rocket upgrades refering to "a rocket" and not rockets in general.

Do I have your permission to re-do the Portuguese translation?

Also, there's another minor problem: Usually Portuguese translations are separated into Portuguese-Portugal or Portuguese-Brazilian (usually PT_PT and PT_BR), can we use a similar nomenclature for consistency?

(I just realized the original translation could have been done in Brazilian Portuguese. Maybe I'm being too hasty, it's 5am over here anyway.)
Current status: Sick and Learning to model in blender. Failing at both.

We have both pt.po and pt_BR.po.

That might be the case, it looks like Tucalipe did both the Portuguese and Brazilian translations: viewtopic.php?t=1509.

Basically yes, as far as I know we only have a real maintainer for the German translation. Though you could perhaps ask Tucalipe directly.

See also viewtopic.php?t=3023 for general translation info.

It seems someone else was doing pt_pt on November of last year... Curiously his last message told us he will finish up by thursday... 9 months ago... I shall try to get in contact with him.

If you can't get in contact with him, feel free to just redo the Portuguese translation yourself.

He has most of the work done so I might as well make use of it. I sent him a pm, if he won't respond by the end of the month I'll do it from scratch :stare:

You could also just improve what he's done so far, if you have access to it.

I don't like using stuff without permission. But he allowed me to continue his work so maybe in a few weeks I'll have this wrapped up, we shall see :)

EDIT: Might take a bit longer than I thought, there seems to be quite a bit of leftovers from the Brazilian partial translation and some phrases I've looked at sound a bit odd. :stare:
Any ETA on the next version of Warzone? I'd like to get this finished before a new version comes out.

You have permission. The GPL is explicit permission to do whatever you want with it as long as you keep the license, and everything in Warzone is GPLed.

Next version of Warzone is next week. You're gonna have to hurry if you want to finish before then. ;)

I wasn't sure if the translation would automatically be GPLed...

By the way, what's the difference between
msgid "Built-in diagnostic and repair systems"
msgid "On-board diagnostic and repair systems"

I'm just translating them both as "internal diagnostic and repair systems"

Progress: Line 9 245 (out of 12 215)

On-board sounds more sexy! But "internal diagnostic and repair systems" is fine.

Yes, but the problem is I have to translate both of them  And I have no idea where they are used.

http://guide.wz2100.net/r/autorepair

Well, Auto Repair calls it "on-board". "Built-in" appears unused.

I figured one of them was redundant... We should clean up these strings to avoid needless work in the future... Is there any problem in just outright removing them?

Just translate them to the same thing, for now.

Ouch, I started using poedit and found 5 syntax errors on stuff I didn't write. Mostly missing syntax and extra quotation marks . They're all fixed now (I hope it won't break later :p) 80% done :)

"Bomb turret explodes in proximity to enemy" - Now that's a cut feature I hadn't heard anyone mention.

Edit: Is the original string supposed to have typos?
