I just ran "Devastation" from my original retail disk with the Escape RPL player.... as they say in Spanish - "Caca" or let
me translate into polite English: way pixelated, imho. Well it's probably one of those "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" deals..

BTW - how exactly did you all deal with the original .rpl files ? Curious...

I believe they were converted with this:
rpl2avi.tar.gz - http://download.gna.org/warzone/develop ... avi.tar.gz

I did my conversion for the vid I did another way... I used the original source, then just dumped out images to a sequence of files, and same with the sound, then put them back together with ffmpeg. I never did get around to finishing that either. One of these days, I should go back and fix these things I pushed to the side. :stressed:
and it ends here.

Zarel wrote:Well, currently, the FMVs that come with Warzone are much worse than the original 320x240. After all, they've been compressed from 1GB down to 180MB.
That was the point I tried to make, the originals need to be reencoded with better quality (which isn't much use doing now, since the new Theora version isn't finished yet). But I doubt the quality gain from upscaling would be worth the increase in file size (if someone wants to prove me wrong there, go ahead - I am interested in actually seing some upscaling results, that's why I posted the link to the avis earlier).

BTW, your file size comparison isn't very valid, the rpl format was intended for playback on ~100MHz machines (and the Playstation), modern (and Theora is modern, in that context) codecs don't have that limitation and give a better quality/size ratio.

Thanks Buginator & cybersphinx for the responses - they do help understand what's involved here.

What you did Bug sounds interesting. I'll have to DL and have a look.

Right, this is nuts. I downloaded the cut scenes independently to take a look at them. But I can't find anyway to play them. I tried using iTunes or Windows Media Center but despite opening the programs with the files i can't find them in there. I tried using Windows Media player and I get that error message claiming it can't support the file type or doesn't support the codec used to compress the file.

What exactly do I need to do to play them? Windows naturally doesn't give me anything to go on. I was hoping I could play them outside the game without having to go through the campaign.

Thanks, now I just have to figure which parts i need to download and make sense of this >.<

Ok. I don't get this. I'm either having an attack of the dumb. But reading that little description I went to the FAQ...

Seriously, how the hell do I use this theora?! Every FAQ link takes me to another FAQ! it;s just walls and walls of text and there are no clear and consise instructions! I don't know where to start or what to open?! I downloaded libtheora 1.0 and libvorbis 1.2.0 and it's just a bunch of files and file names and no way to use them. All I want to do is play some videos. I didn't expected it to be this complicated! :mad;

<head explodes>

Please, for the less advanced and less skilled people, someone explain this to me clearly. Having to pick through all this damm text and follow link after link is not my prefered learning style.

Get http://download.gna.org/warzone/videos/ ... i.tar.lzma (AVIs made from the RPLs with rpl2avi). Should play in any player.

No, that still does not work. I got the same error message on Media Player, Quicktime did not recognize it, iTunes does not bring it up and Windows media center does the same. :(

Hm, sorry, I would have expected WMP to play those. Well, you can use MPlayer, and I guess VLC works as well.

I was thinking about VLC, had it on my old Computer and know it is good.

Ok VLC doesn't exactly play it. I set the files to open with VLC, it plays something but I have no sound or video, just the bar showing it is playing.

As for MPlayer. I'm still working out what exactly I need to download for that. Working on it.

Grrr, why does it have to be such a pain in the neck to do something do damm simple? >.<

Ok. MPlayer also has not worked. I also tried something called K-Lite Codec Pack which gave me something called Media Player classic, that claimed it could not render it. That also failed to work.

Why doesn't it work? :( Nothing seems to like the damm file.

.

The link I gave you has a clear downloads page:

http://www.theora.org/downloads/

Which has the binary players AND a link for more Theora Software Players downloads:

http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/TheoraSoftwarePlayers

That listing of dls covers every aspect of Players and Operating system downloads needed to
run the files.

Sounds like what you could use is the DirectShow filter which adds support for Ogg Vorbis, Ogg Speex, Ogg Theora, Ogg FLAC, and native FLAC to any DirectShow-compliant player such as Windows Media Playe and BSPlayer

Btw... I run the original retail files (.rpls) with the Eidos Escape Player..

Regards, whipper.
