Trunk on Crappy Intel GFX Chip Set / Drivers

Post by whippersnapper »

.

Latest Trunk runs fine on my monster DT Box but after hearing many tales of woe over the months from folks trying to
run it on LTs with Intel Integrated Chip sets with crappy Intel drivers, I was curious.

I also have a 4 year old Toshiba LT Duo Centrino with a Mobile Intel(R) 945 Express Chipset on which I loaded
the latest trunk and so began my tale of woe !

I already had loaded the latest drivers for the device a few months ago - double checked... no new release... I'm good
to go.

Open and run.... for about 3 seconds then it quits to the DT. I play around with every variation of game vid and graphic options..
same with the device GFX options....over and over... same result. I get errors that refer to the iglicd32.dll time and again... So
I replace with various versions going back to 2005. Same problem. Hmmm.. I check for damaged reg files... fix those... Same problem.
On the off chance I run the Tutorial which seems fine... hmmm....maybe I'm onto a clue.. but really a false hope as it craps-out when
I try to build something... I've exhausted all my trouble-shooting protocols. This is just not gonna work...

More on a lark than any really hope of working, I re-installed the same driver package from a few months ago. Run Trunk one last time...
it works.... I run it trough the gauntlet... try to see if it will break. It doesn't. It's been running for hours without a hitch.

Hmmm... welcome to Intel Driver-WIN OS voodoo.... Anyway it's cool cause I can play Trunk on my LT when I'm traveling. :)

Here's a cap on 4-player Rush- high quality settings and it runs without lagging..... NEXT: Test with an 8-player map with tons of units in play.

That's ridiculous.

Which drivers was it? You should tell everyone (seriously, like, everyone) so we can all finally play Warzone in Windows/Intel.

That's ridiculous.
It may be 'ridiculous', but it also seems to be a documented fact. The basic strategy for fixing driver problems is first upgrade, then rollback.

Personally, I'm not suprised that a "a 4 year old Toshiba LT Duo Centrino with a Mobile Intel(R) 945 Express" works better with an old driver. Programmers know that to add features is to add bugs.

Congrats to whippersnapper for being thorough and sticking with the problem.

Ok then...

The graphic drivers are both chipset specific and OS specific.

My package is from February 2008 and I got it from here;

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx

You have to use their Chipset Driver Update Utility here:

http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/detect.htm

Now here is something to keep in mind ......

All like named .dlls are NOT the same....

My Error messages all pointed to iglicd32.dll

The package I ended up using had this .dll from Feb 2008.

I thought I would be clever and grab ONLY this iglicd32.dll from
another package released in Jan. 2009 that covered most
of the chipsets in the same family as mine but did NOT list
mine exactly as supported - didn't work...

Honestly, this kind of stuff drives me nuts cause I'm like a
dog with his bone when it comes to figuring problems I'm having.
This is both good and bad for me because I can't focus on any of
my other activities that are much more enjoyable to do. Which
is why a stable working environment that I don't have to continuously
troubleshoot is a top priority for me. The last major prob I had was a
year ago and before that, 3 years without a hitch. Basically, the less
I have to trouble-shoot the happier and more productive I am. But, as
in this case, you got to bite the bullet sometimes and do your best to
figure something unpleasant out.

In the end - I frankly am shocked how well Trunk runs on this LT. 'Bout
the only thing I see it as never being up to is "shader" intensive progs.

Regards, whipper :)
