Gameplay question

Post by Tucalipe »

> Yeah... call me dumb if this was already anwsered but I couldn't find it searching (prolly cuz I didn't search correctly):
On the original Warzone 2100, the minimap didn't started completely revealed. It started blue, as while you advanced w your units, the terrain filled the minimap. But on the current version, the minimap starts filled up. Is that meant to be like that?

> Also, why the "fog of war" setting is not kept between sessions? Every time I start the game I need to change this setting.

For the beginning, if you have the distance fog option on, it will reveal the entire map's terrain. It changes when you load the game.

Unfortunately,I can't help you with the other question.

No, it shouldn't be like that. This was a bug in old versions of trunk, but neither 2.1 nor the latest trunk builds should have this problem. Which version are you playing?

No idea. Try changing the setting in config?

I'm bug testing the 6653 trunk version.
BTW, when I use Fog of War option, the minimap acts accordingly. However, when I use midst, it doesn't. Original Warzone had a fog of war effect on the minimap on both settings.

You mean Distance Fog? I don't think that's a major issue, then - it makes more sense that the minimap would reveal the entire thing if you can see the entire thing on the screen, too.

I guess the original wz was bugged then xD
BTW, what about the fog of war setting? Isn't there any way to keep that setting in game? What do you mean by "changing the config"?

Go to Options and turn on Fog of War? That should theoretically be enough. Does it go back to Distance Fog each time you restart the game or something?

If that's the issue, you can change the config, by which I mean the config file in "Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents\Warzone 2100\config" (Windows), "~/.warzone2100/config" (Linux), "~/Library/Application Support/Warzone 2100/config" (Mac).

Confirmed, original WZ had the "fog of war" effect on the minimap regardless of wheter it was set on "mist" aka "distance fog" or not on the main screen, thus i'd say that it was meant to be like that... it also makes sense: even if you see mist in the air instead of a pitch black wall, you still don't know what's over there untill you go check it out ;)

I have just made a post on this issue, but in my case it's the other way around: I wanna have "mist" always on, also "screenshake". I'll check it out in the config section, hope it works, bye!

Not really. If you can see the map on-screen, you should be able to see it in the minimap. I think the current implementation makes more sense. Then again, I usually play in Fog of War anyway, makes it easier to remember where I've explored and where I haven't.

Think of it: what is the difference of you walking around the landscape in a fog (mist ingame) or at night (fog of war ingame)?
If we think of our sense of direction and sense of our surroundings as a "virtual minimap" in our heads, we can surely say that either if you can see 10 m ahead of you (fog - mist) or 3 m ahead of you (night - fog of war), you CAN NOT see or know, what is hidden behind these locations or 50 m on either side of you.

If fog of war would be enabled on the minimap in all modes like it was in the original game, nobody would have trouble with that situation, regardles of what main view style they choose - becouse they would have been able to see their progress on the mini-map even if they prefer the mist setting.

Edit: in the wake of some thinking I shortened this post and edited out the unnecessary stuff

Okay, in hindsight i understand the point, that if you can "fly over" the whole map in "distance fog mode" and check out all the terrain features, it would make sense that the mini map is revealed as well... In each case you don't see the enemy bases until you find them, so either way is fine with me :)
