I think defences should be customizable just like the tanks.
In that case the building tab would be much easier to use, you just have the main buildings and your choice of defences.
Also I think there should be a difference between a hardpoint with turret and a wall with turret. This however is just a small thing that would improve the look.

I wasn't talking about that though it is an even better idea.

Also I'm thinking of Energy Walls
You build two Energy Wall Generators, click the first one, an option Connect will apear, click it, then click the sencond Energy Wall Generator, now a energy barrier will be made between those two points.
Maybe they could use energy to work, energy is regenerated over time, normally the barrier is disabled, but when an enemy comes into view they will start working and generate a barrier. If one of the two points doesn't have any energy left, the barriers disapears and enemies can go through.
The wall itself is indestructable, but the Generators are fragile, it's best to protect them with normal walls.
Another suggestion is some kind of propulsion/body which can travers energy barriers anytime.
Its not that a new idea but it would be nice.

Moving Walls, yes - like in Metal Fatigue too. Just played this Game few Days ago since Years again (because i finally found my two CDs). I love those customizable Combots (or huge Cyborgs-which-are-customizable-like-Tanks, heh).
There are other Games too which would deserve a new Development.. Metal Fatigue e.g. wasn't continued, Sony bought the Company 1 Month after the Game Release and no one knows who has the Rights - as far as i know, the Game is Abandonware - but there's no Source. 
Check my earlier Post. I am for the Energy-Walls too (here i don't mean my EMP-Walls, scroll down).
But you shouldn't be able to build, where the Energy-"Beam" starts - it shouldn't go through other Structures.

This is a great idea! Being able to customize walls instead of manually making my builders deconstruct then rebuild them would be much more efficient.

Energy Walls do have a big handicap !
if one of the "Connection-Corners" is broken, the whole wall-section is out of energy and it will create a big hole in the defence...
self-made defence-walls sounds great
no more extremely multi-tabbed construction-screen with plenty of defence-walls and bunkers.... only the 3-4 i want to use and nothing more
