Problem

Post by Kharos »

Why are mac and linux users finding a complete lack of mods on the forum?

I would think some mod makers would prefer a challenge, maybe try and make them. It would be very easy to test them on the forum via users.

I really wanted the UKM (Ultimate killer mod, by Black Project), and yet to my horror, it would not support mac or linux, and I can't afford a windows supporting computer.

Also, the zombie and gates mod, which I also liked the look of, where unuseable for the same reason.

Please incorporate these into the game.

PS No, I can't make mods myself, so don't go on about it, I admit it.
Edit: Post edited for offensiveness, now slightly less offensive.

We do. However, mod makers are free to do as they choose — if they do not want to/can not support anything other than Windows that is their prerogative. If you have a problem with this, take it up with them, or if the license permits, modify the mod such that it is compatible with Linux/OS X.

Have you tried asking them to make their mods compatible with Linux/Mac OS X? Have you tried to find out why those mods do not work?

Many consider blasphemy to be highly offensive — please take note of this for future reference. We do accept mods into the codebase so long as the maintainers are willing to support them. This is the case with the NTW mod.

Thank you for your concern, I was very angry, then I spotted the first mac mod for any game I've ever seen. Your thread on the mod that gives cinematics and 2 new maps, as I can see sofar.

Also, when I tried to contact Black Project about the UKM, he would never answer. I have yet to find out why.

...

all the moders have dedicated threads for their mods (same with mappers) - you might try posting in those threads
about conversions to Mac and Linux.

hmmm... come to think of it,.... i wonder if anyone has tried to run the WZ win binary in Parallels 4.0 (on the Mac or Linux)....
or 32EW for that matter. ? i've heard tell of win games with much higher sys req running fine.

Hmm. What exactly is it about mods that make them incompatible with Mac/Linux? I was under the impression they were all data files and interpreted code, no native binaries.

I've tried running Warzone in XP in VMware Fusion in OSX Leopard on a standard MacBook (1 core and 2 GB of RAM dedicated to the VM, out of a Core 2 Duo 2.1 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, and an X3100). Even the main menu gets around 1.3 FPS, and the game itself gets around 0.6 FPS. And this was before the new terrain renderer was introduced.

1.10 might have ridiculously low system requirements, but 2.2 doesn't.

We require hardware OpenGL acceleration, period. If that is not available then the FPS will tank, irrespective of anything else. (This is more of a problem on Linux, where it is surprisingly easy to disable OpenGL acceleration.)

It is likely parallels does not provide an OpenGL ICD (installable client driver) for Windows — required for the aforementioned acceleration.

Mods should — in theory — be compatible with both Windows and Linux/OS X. Chances are that the original poster does not know how to launch the game from the command line (somewhat tricky under OS X) or how to find the autoload directory and therefore is unable to start the game with the mod enabled.

........

thanks guys..... learning something new everyday is a good day. i must confess
i have not paid close attention to the Mac and Linux versions of WZ which i guess
brands me as being Win-centric but, at the same time, i hope not a Win-chauvinist hog. O_o

i'm just going by hearsay but i've heard Fusion sux compared to Parallel 4.0 which
does support OpenGL 2.0, DX9 & DX pixel shader 2.0. but i can't test it since i
don't have an Intel based Mac. only reason i'd really be curious is for 32EW and
if Mac users could use the P 4.0 VM to create maps since a cross platform editor
is not likely around the corner at this stage with all else that's going on, etc.. i would
hazard to guess.. :ninja:
