backing up saved games
To do this on windows do I just take the savegame folder out of warzone 2100 in my documents? I've been playing for quite a few hours now that's all, and I'd hate to lose my saves. Also, if I do have a pc crash and then have to re-install the game, I just replace that file right? And it won't matter what version of the game has come out, it'll still work?

Re: backing up saved games
Yea just copying the savegame folder is all you have to do.
But saved games are NOT guaranteed to work with different versions of WZ, for example saves from the current stable version 2.0.10 will not work with the current version in beta 2.1-beta1, beta2 and beta3 (when its released) this is because they had to change the save file layout in order to accommodate new features.
I think the rule-of-thumb is that saves are compatible between minor version changes but not major ones, eg. 2.0.xx should work with each other but not with 2.1.xx and vice-versa.

Re: backing up saved games
Ah, I'll probably find myself going right back through in the future then, which should be cool if I've not played in ages. Thanks anyway.
edit : just adding this after I found it out in another thread. Basically so that anyone wanting the same info knows the right place to look :
The savegame folder for Version 2.1 BETA 2, on windows, along with maps, multiplay, music, screendumps + config and keymap files, and finally the netplay log text file, are all located in : C:\Documents and Settings\[your username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Warzone 2100 2.1

Re: backing up saved games
hello, i thought about making a new thread but I guess I'd better not spam the forum so soon ,its only my 2nd post :p
I have only 10days of experience using any linux system, running on Ubuntu 8.04 at the moment.
So installing warzone with apt-get seemed like the easier way to do so, especially seeing as there was an update notification provided about it, to!
However reading some posts from this forum (purely out of interest for the game), I noticed that indeed this is NOT the version to be playing in.
This is also became evident when I installed a windows version on win xp (i have a dual boot setup) where I noticed some sound effects for the first time even though Ive played the campaign up to mission alpha 10 already.
So, here I am aiming to use the latest warzone version, so naturally I want to backup my savefiles, but they are nowhere to be found! I have the following 2 directories at my home folder:
.warzone2100
.warzone2100-2.1
but both have no files at all at the directory "savegames". However, this dirs are probably only there due to a failed attempt to install the game without apt-get (actually I dont remember what attempts I did to get it installed).
However I know this: on the main menu is writen: Version trunk r3595 - built Feb 13 2008
that means its almost a year old, so if anyone knows, where will I find the savegames for that version? Or this version up-to-date anyways?
Or if you don't know where they are stored, you can tell me their filenames or their extensions? So that I can run a search for them from nautilus...
thanks for your time.

The game don't ship with savegames. *YOU* must create them, or download them.Kinnison wrote:hello, i thought about making a new thread but I guess I'd better not spam the forum so soon ,its only my 2nd post :p

Re: backing up saved games
I mentioned I am already playing the campaign and wanted to backup my savegames: that is because I have made savegames. In fact all of my save slots are full, but I still dont see them in the directories I mentioned. Can you just tell me where that version is supposed to keep the saves? Or I will have to start all over again...

It should be in .warzone2100-2.1/savegamesKinnison wrote:I mentioned I am already playing the campaign and wanted to backup my savegames: that is because I have made savegames. You can run --debug all, and it will spit out where the configdir is at also.

that is what I got when run the above command. I checked all of those directories that got spit out, some like /usr/share/warzone2100 and usr/data do not even exist on my system! So I am still unable to find any savegames.
The "segmentation fault" line is related to my graphics driver installation. I have an ati x1950pro, its almost impossible to get the driver to work with it, lots of people are struggling with it.
For now I will have to stick with the older version cause I wont to advance the game :p Although I am getting a bit creamed already at beta 1 mission. :p

Re: backing up saved games
That is the directory where it stores everything.wz : Write dir: /home/kinnison/.warzone2100-2.1/
So, do a ls -la /home/kinnison/.warzone2100-2.1/ and you should find everything.
On the other hand, if you do --confdir path/name_of_directory
then you can force it to use path/name_of_directory to save all your stuff to. You just need to specify that everytime, and make sure path/name_of_directory exsists BEFORE doing that command line option.
