Warzone2100 slow on Eeepc..

Post by Tranen »

Hi, I've installed Warzone2100 on asus eeepc.
The linux installer works perfectly.
The problem is the frame rate, actually its unplayable, I don't know how to measure the frame rate but i think we are around 10fps (with --noshadow parameter)

Do you have some idea for increase performance or simply the eeepc is to slow for this game?

Here are some specs. of eeepc:
Cpu: 900 MHz Intel Celeron M ULV 353 @ pre-downclocked to 630 MHz
Ram: 512Mb
Video card: Intel GMA 900 (integraded, 8MB video memory by default)
ScreenResolution:800x640
OS: Custom Linux Xandros (derived from debian)

What you think?
Many thanks
Bye

Seems quite low to me. Playing it on a P3 with 1 GHz and 512 MB and GF4 Ti-4200 with 64 MB and it's quite "slow". You could reduce textureSize to 16 (see config file "textureSize=") and perhaps you could reduce the resolution a bit more...

Many thanks for your ansewer.

I've found that the original game recommendend prerequisites was:
* Processor: 800 MHz
* Memory: 512 MB
* Video: 32 MB

There is some difference about the prerequisites between the windows and linux versions?
The new version of warzone has raised this prerequisites (increasing graphics, IA etc)?

I hope in your answers, thanks again.

ps: I've tried the game on my "normal pc", an AMD with Nvidia8400Gs. It worked very fine, and I must say that is a very good game!

Not sure where you found this, but on my original game's box it is saying:
  • 166 MHz (recommended: 233 MHz)
  • 32 MB RAM
  • 2 MB SVGA graphics card (recommended: 4MB D3D compatible 3D acceleration card)
It is true that prerequisites raised, but I think that this somehow is the price being paid for being able to play WZ on several different platforms (devs, correct me, if this is wrong :P). And the software renderer does not work anymore, so you need OpenGL support.

It is probably the lack of OpenGL support. 900Mhz is enough, no problems there. 512MiB memory, again, no issue. Try giving some more memory to your graphics card, see if that helps.

(For the record, at home, my father plays Warzone on a dual 866Mhz, 512MiB memory system with a GeForce 3 64MiB graphics card @ 800x600 with no issues.)

I don't think so, because on the same hardware I use Irrlicht engine with opengl render.
Also Java3D works good.
Try giving some more memory to your graphics card, see if that helps.
Good idea, i will try it :)

I'm not able to finde the config file. For what I know it should be under ~/warzone2100/ directory but it isn't there..Can you help me?

Thanks

Things such as texture size can be changed using the in-game options menu :)

Now you will think that i'm pretty stupid...but I can't find that option from the game menu...

In Graphic option I just see: Reverse mouse, screen shake, fog, subtitles, video playback..
In Game option I see: Difficulty, scroll speed and unit color..

2.1 should have a Video options item in the Options menu.

Mhh, he was talking about the Linux installer which means that he probably has 2.0.10. I should have read more carefully (and you should have told us about your version ;X). There is no option textureSize for 2.0.10. Then there is not much you can do besides playing with a lower resolution (and without shadows)...

EDIT:

I think the problem is caused by your intel grafic card
I got the same problem with my Mobile Intel 943GML Express...
For now i'm using the original cd version with wine... runs fine

you should have told us about your version
You're right, howewer I'm trying to compile it from source but I've not luck until today (QuesoGLC dependencies...).
I'have a debian derived distribution (Xandros) but non fully compatible with debian packages, so I'm trying to build Quelso from source :gonk:
Then there is not much you can do besides playing with a lower resolution
Tryed with 640x480 (and noshadows), runs better but it's still unplayable in battle scenes with more than three/four units.
I got the same problem with my Mobile Intel 943GML Express
Ok, afterall the eeepc is an ultra-mobile pc, it's first aim is not to play videogame.

Have the same problem on my EEE 900. Games run and everything, but I only have ~2 fps in game. This on Mandriva 2008.1, however it worked normally in Zenwalk so this is not a limitation in hardware.

Tested version: 2.0.10. Both source and from repository.

HW: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 04). (lspci)

You need better openGL drivers. That is the main problem.
I suggest you bug intel to release better ones. :)

Why are we saying this so much? Warzone 2100 is a game that was released in 1999. It ran quickly on those computers. Even in software mode, I've never seen the retail version stutter. Nowadays, besides shadows, Warzone's graphics haven't improved much, so it shouldn't be using significantly more resources.

The Eee has specs comparable or superior to computers of 1999. It should therefore be able to run Warzone with no problems. So why can't it? Don't get me wrong, I love this game, but the performance problems just don't make sense.
