Porting for the Pandora handheld?

Post by Tripmonkey_uk »

First of all I'd just like to say hi to everyone and huge thanks to the developers for improving on an already great game :)

The Pandora hand held http://www.openpandora.org/ will be released soon and I feel that both the Warzone2100 Resurrection project and the Pandora would greatly benefit from an official port.

The Resurrection project would benefit from having a stable platform to bug test on, which would help out the devs and speed up development. The Pandora would have a game that is of commercial quality, which would prove that it can handle commercial games and could tempt software companies to port over some of their older software which no longer makes them money on the PC platform. Maybe they would even open source some?

Control won't be a problem. With the 2 joy sticks on the Pandora being ideal for the 3D navigation and the touch screen support for selecting and moving the units. I can imagine using the stylus to draw a circle around a group of tanks for selecting them and holding it on the screen for a couple of seconds to bring up the units options menu. This would be even easier (+ more fun) than playing it on a laptop (IMO).

Judging by the games specs, the hand held will be able to handle it easily. The Pandora will only support OpenGL ES http://www.khronos.org/opengles/ for the graphics though, so I'm not too sure on how hard it will be to get it working? There are devs on the Pandora forum who will be willing to try porting it, but I though a official port would be best for both projects. Plus you might be able to get a free dev unit if you sell yourselves enough ;)

Anyway that's all I wanted to say for now, so thanks again for all the work you've put into the project and congrats on making this version even better than the original. You'll probably be seeing me around here a little from now on as I'm hooked on the damn game.. again :D

It should be possible.

OpenGL ES should work, if not, let me know that fails, and I'll look into fixing it. (You may need to disable shadows.)

This was done using an early version of Warzone (0.2.x), using the software renderer. It seems to be quite popular amoung N810 owners (myself included): http://www.internettablettalk.com/forum ... hp?t=16502

What would really be cool is a port for Windows Mobile.

(by the way hi!)

These are the days where I wish we would have someone to maintain the software renderer... *sigh*
Maybe with the next engine we will include a basic renderer as well...
