belated kudos for warzone starter

Post by kdkentuc »

years back i downloaded, i think fron newst.org, some files for retail warzone2100 called the "warzone starter".
well i haven't used it until now. and What a Treat it is!!.

the beautiful part about it is you can choose different skirmish A.I. to try.
for example: Turtle ai or Water ai or 1.04 ai.

so my Kudos goes out to the creators of the the warzone starter app. Thank you! It is brilliant.
[ i believe the makers are Maynard and Troman and Rmanjack... sorry if i got the names wrong. ] if you guys have a chance to use it try it out.

* This is HOW it actually went (and by the way "WZ Starter" only works with the Pumpkin Retail Binary and the NEWST v.1.11 and "Pumpkin-2" v.1.12..)

* In May 1999, after I convinced Alex Lee (Pumpkin A.I. Guru) to have an IRC Chat with Sputnick, myself, Carver, Darkseid_D, Skorpian and a few others.... one of the major topics of that chat was creating a framework for playing with Multiple A.I. Personalities and controling incomaptible Mods..

* Fast foward to the creation of NEWST by myself, Sputnick, Carver & Stratadrake (then known as Richard_Player) in the summer of '99. Our first MAJOR task was to create that framework and Sputnick led the charge programming it and dubbing it "ModSwitcher". When Sputy left us in the summer of 2000 Troman asked if he could continue "Mod Switcher's" development and Sputy said of course. Troman continued development for many years and renamed "Mod Switcher" to "WZ Starter".....

* In '04 we finally got the WZ`source liberated and  shortly there after the cross-platform development of the WZ source commenced with the major goal of portability - eventually leading to WZ for *nix and Mac Platforms.

* Development on "WZ Starter" was suspended back then. Troman has since focused his efforts on extending the WZ Script Lang, working on his excellent adaptive A.I. "Aivolution" and re-balancing the WRP WZ... and so on... Nobody has picked-up dvelopment of WZ Starter for compatibility with the cross-platform WZ...

* An excellent tool which led to the creation of many outstanding Mods, Map-Mods and A.I. personalties that as far as the cross-platform WZ is concerned may as well not even exist.

* Anyway, I'm sure everyone involved with "WZ Starter's" history appreciates the acknowledgment including I'm sure Troman who will be reading this... :-)

* Btw... Maynard was a part of NEWST and was also a driveing force on many other developments with us over the years.... he was also the creator of a few super fun Map-Mods like "Bootcamp"... last I heard he went back to school to get out of the construction field (if I remember right) and become a C++ programmer. Great guy and we miss him.

Thanks, kdkentuc, it is always great when your work is appreciated.

Although Warzone Starter can not be used with WRP version of warzone, we are exploring the possibilities of implementing some of the Warzone Starter functionalitiy directly into the game.

After reading about the past I have one remark concerning the history of Warzone Starter. Technically Warzone Starter is not a continuation of development of Mod Switcher in any way, like Microsoft Office is not a continuation of development of Open Office or vice versa, although both programs serve one propose and might resemble each other. Those are actually competing products.

Me contacting Sputnick before starting work on WZS, which was written in a different programming language and without any access to the inner works of Sputnick's intellectual property, was a friendly gesture, since in my opinion it is a good practice to give credit to the person who have came up with an identical idea before you and to prevent tention in the team.

Other than that it was a very informative and ... unexpected excurse into the past i'm sure newcomers will appreciate. :-)

Hey Totalwar..  Good to see some of the old-timers around here  :o

* Sorry. Your absolutely right TW. :)

* And even before Bravenet.  With SLONER, SHang, Skorpy and the rest talking 'bout a WZ OOP.

* Well that last is now a reality in the WZ framework...

* BTW, did you graduate university at 16... working now on your PHd w/ Fermat's Last Theorem ? :D

* Come check us out @ warzone2200 DOT com (Open invite to play with our unreleased files, btw :) )

* Good to see ya bud. You've been missed in the community.

I would've had most of those old emails if it weren't for the fact that my hotmail address was deleted for inactivity back in ~2003, heh...

I started uni at 15 and am still there, although working on my Masters at the moment. Not that that prevents me from gaming ;p Not many rts's though...Once I got active in the rather small Kohan community, I found other rts's difficult to pick up and play due to Kohan's rather unique feel (Mechanically speaking, not the sort of feel to a game that you speak of when talking about an immersive rpg). Although the Kohan community has weakened significantly as of late...The sequal (K:KoW) is pretty much dead but a few regulars still play the original (K:AG)...Haven't been to the forums in ages either...

* Kwel 'bout your Uni and Masters - you'll have to give us some dets on IRC. :)

* 4nE liked Kohan too, I think. It's one of the few I never got around to playing.

* Lot of ol' timers heard your around and look foward to chatting if you have time.

* Usually everyone get's on over the weekends but you can usually find Copper, Grim (Elric's brother), Coyote, et al in the evenings during the week.

*
Server: irc.coppercore.net or coppercore.net
Channel: #warzone2200

* Busy working on WZ 2200 stuff like maps, music, missions, backstory, short-stories, new GPMs, SFX, etc., you might find interesting.

* Look foward to chatting sometime and catching up. :D
