Repair unit scanning + Q's

Post by r34ch »

Ok sorry if this has been suggested or i've missed it, but apparently in 2.1 beta 2, units scan for the best target as stated in the ChangeLog, so machine gun units looks prioritises cyborgs etc?
Unit AI wrote:   * New: Multi-criteria target selection routine to automatically choose the best suitable target.

Well does this apply to repair units? I.e. Look in an area, prioritise repairing of units in red, then yellow etc. I only got to play 2.1.2 for a few minutes today and on the campaign when my repair units went to a group of tanks, it just repaired the closest one and it ended up that tanks on the outside of the formation (the vulnerable ones in red) got repaired last.

Just wondering if this is possible, sorry if it (and below) has been mentioned.

Also, do you plan to contact xfire to get in game support at some stage? I know a few fan made standalone games that managed to get it. Just would be nice for people to see this little classic gem i'm playing ;)

Also also, is there a key i can press to speed up the text story lines?

I don't recall if that's being done, but the thing is; would such a priority be a good thing?

The way it works now (at least, for commander-attached units), is that once the unit hits full health, it returns to the commander.  Therefore, in the interests of micro-managment easing, the best "priority" healing target would be the one with the LEAST amount of missing HP, so it gets back into the fight faster.

And making "new options" to determine whether or not to prioritize low or high HP units sounds like it would cause more confusion than it's worth on the battlefield.

the only problem whit the commander was sometimes, the unit assign whit him go to repair and don't repair. At the end, that can be a pack of a lot of unit they won't repair. You are obligated to return your commander and try to repair it.( other time, the unit is full of life and they don't join the commander too)

its possible that they shoot selected unit but not whit the commander. That all on 1 whit him. :)
The best tactit is to mixted up the great tank, the little tank, the adav and the cyborg. And whit this army, doing great stratégie.

Yes, that's how it works. A unit scans through its possbile targets computing target's value, based on it's weapon type, distance, damage etc and selects what it thinks the best target is.

No, it only works for weapon units at the moment. I do use such an approach for Aivolution AI though. To be able to use it for human players as well the algorithm should probably be a bit more complex though.

Well, yes those are 'just good enough' approaches, where only a single, usually the most important, criteria is considered when making a decision and it is not always the most rational decision, but it's easy to implement.

Of course it is and I do think both human players and AIs could profit from it, but no developer currently has this on his to-do list, afaik because there are more important tasks to be done atm.

That happens when either the pathing to the repair facility ends up completely bottlenecked, or after you have researched Auto-repair.  Those, however, are bugs that should be addressed, as opposed to this newly suggested item.

my favourite target for vtol is the near dead units at a repair station, i go out of my way to leave the stations in order to keep killing the weakened units at them.
get many easy kills that way.
