Hi, the best place to check out what is being done is probably this section in the forums:

All models need to be redone, and when multi-turret support works fully, then most all the models will need to support more than one turret.
If you downloaded the latest BETA of the game, then in it, there are some .wz files. Those are just zip files. You can unzip that to a directory, and that is where all the textures & models are.
You do need some tools, but I think that is covered in the other thread in that section of the forums.
Any question, just ask, I am sure someone will reply with information that can help you out.
