I think that's a really good idea. Getting people in chat is key to building an mp community and retaining players so hopefully it will help.

I know I’m a nag but getting folks into IRC is good to to arrange games and help new players but I must again remind all players the kicking of new players is killing the MP game so be patient with them and allow a chance to learn.
