What are the benefits of experience exactly?
I believe the benefits are Accuracy, Speed, and HP bonuses.  (Note:  bonuses stack if you have a tenured unit attached onto a tenured commander)

As for only having 20 units in the final stage...

???

At the end of the previous stage (and for that matter, the first 30 minutes of the final one), you are given time to build new factories and replace many of the destroyed oil derricks.  So you should have had access to virtually infinite reinforcements during the last stage...?

Awesome, my Commanders are pretty high levels.

Oh I had a kickass army and 5 of each factory and 80k in power saved up but no, it was not to be. The dropship circles aimlessly after depositing the 2nd group of 10 units, sometimes it randomly managed to find it's way back to base but this was a rare occurrence and I have no idea what caused it.

It took me 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete the final mission but I didn't take out the base in the top left.

Another known bug.

For some reason, the rate at which a unit turns is independent on the speed the game runs at.

Or, said another way, slowing down the game will cause a unit's rate of turn, relative to it's forward momentum, to increase.

As the VTOL transport has to hit a very specific spot on the game map to "leave", and that spot is inside it's turning radius on normal difficulty, if it isn't properly positioned on the pad after touching down to drop off the reinforcements, it will get stuck.

The fix is to slow the game down, let the transport get out, then speed it back up.

How do I speed up or slow down the game?

+ and - on the numpad, if i remember right.
Or some of the keys left from the big enter/return.

Take note, that while you can set the time compression that high, you can ALSO RUIN YOUR GAME.
The 3/5/10/20x were mainly added to help devs out with certain things.  I am thinking those should be disabled for non cheating games.

The same goes with any SP mission that involves timers, it for screw around with that stuff, it may miss a event, and your hosed, and you must start over again.
and it ends here.

The speed trick worked perfectly, thanks!

I have a Mac Laptop (so no numpad) so it took a bit of fiddling, Ctrl + Shift + Equals did it for me.
