Mac offline LAN games

So my friends and I want to play on a computer to computer network, which technically is offline. How SOL am I for LAN games. And if I'm not what would I have to do to get this working.

Nothing special.
Just have the other LAN player(s) type in the local IP address of your machine in the 'join by IP' dialog.
Don't use your external IP, and since you are asking here, I assume you already tried to join via lobby, and that didn't work, since your router isn't smart enough to allow that.

The local IP doesnt show up when I use network utility.

Does this have to do with the fact that I'm using an ad-hoc network?

Or am I just technologically illiterate
