would be cool to be able to add a new weapon type or a new effect or even a new unit
is that currently possible with mod?

partly No. I asked for an Alpha to Epsilon generic weapon modifiers and weapon groups but it was never added in the game.

However there is 3 weapon upgrade group : slow missile, slow rocket and bunker buster that are not used yet and could be added in mods (with full ROF, Accuracy and DMG upgrade) as long as you classify it in one of the actual weapon modifiers.

You can also merge some weapon modifier together. I believe there is too much of them. for exemple I merged all rounder and anti-tank together in NRS. That would allow for another weapon modifier.

I asked to unluck the number of stats count in the game. I believe they multiplied most of it by 3 some time ago. Technicaly this mean there is room for some 300 new weapons and 150 bodies. With units that go with it as well. :)

Problem with so many weapons / bodies, is that it can get confusing because current UI struggles to bring clarity to so many items.

If you want existing mod with loads of weapons/bodies and plenty of custom models/effects, check out Shadow Wolf's Contingency mod: viewtopic.php?f=49&t=9493
