Steam Greenlight?
I dunno if this has been posted, but for the sake of looking like a moron, I'll post it anyways. Have you guys ever thought of bringing this up to Steam Greenlight? (I couldn't think of anything else to say. So it ends here.)

legally possible, not sure if anyone ever found an answer to the real question though. Will steam host an open source free game. I haven't looked into it since the last time this was posted a few months ago.
