I know this isn't my topic, but i'm having the same trouble with the latest stable version. I tried the ctrl + +, but that only increases game speed. And i also have my monitor settings that its brightest. Any other suggestions?

gamma increasing is binded to alt + num_[ + ]  ( press "+" on rightside of keybord)

or use a config file in 5th line: gamma=20  //by default << just increase number

I got it to work, but it's just weird... I didn't have to change any settings in the config file. I noticed that the gamma works great if you start the game without first having a warzone2100 settings folder (i.e. "~/.warzone2100"). But after i close the game and re-start the game, it's dark all over again. The way i managed to "fix" it was by making a "back-up" folder: "~/.warzone2100~". I think this is something that should be noted.
