I downloaded v2.3.9 and tried to run the skirmishes. When any map loaded the texture for the landscape appeared as a grey blob/block. I tried reinstalling the version but had no luck. What can I do to fix this? I am not a serious information technology person, might had to draw it for me with shapes and crayons.

Sounds like your graphics drivers need updating. I used to get that problem, where all the land would be grey, until I upgraded graphics drivers and then it started working ok.
