is the transport bringing units from alpha on a time limit.
or does it just crash around the 4th run regardless?

It will crash on the 5th transport run.
You can bring over 10X4 = 40 units successfully.
It's a good idea to prepare at the end of Final Alpha by recycling / rebuilding your force down to 40 units, so that none are lost.
Note: if you do try a 5th lift, whatever is in the 5th groups will NOT be present at the downed transport you rescue.
That said, I do NOT know if any leftover alpha units are present when you find them again later in the Gamma stages... but on the off-chance you haven't ever seen that part, I won't throw out a spoiler.
