What Should Experience Do?

Post by Stratadrake »

Okay, we know that currently a unit's experience gives it the following benefits:
* Accuracy boost
* Evasion boost
* Defense boost
* Speed boost

And if the unit is a commander, his posse is automatically matched to his level or given a +1 level bonus (whichever is higher).

I have a few questions and ideas.

1 - Sensor units experience

As a nonweapon unit (same as trucks and mobile repairs), Sensors obviously don't enjoy the Accuracy bonus, though they do still get the Speed, Evasion and Defense bonuses. But what about their posse? How about sensor units give an Accuracy bonus to their attached artillery/VTOLs instead? After all, they are what enable artillery to strike things that aren't within their personal sight range (I do not know if this is also the case with VTOL's - because if it's not, the mobile VTOL Strike Sensor really is about useless). On the other hand, they are not the same as a commander, just artillery/VTOL spotters.

2 - Weapon sight range

We already know how the accuracy bonus makes a skilled combat unit more able to hit their target. But does this not mean that they can (at least in theory) hit the unit from farther away? In other words, experience could also grant a combat unit a sight range bonus (similar to a sensor upgrade, but specific to each unit's experience level), allowing them to target and shoot farther than their normal sight range (if their weapon's maximum range permits it). Railguns can shoot a maximum of 16 squares away, but as a direct-fire weapon they can never strike anything outside their user's personal (8sq) sight range. Now imagine if the unit received, say, +0.5sq sight bonus per level - up to 10 levels means up to an extra 5 squares of range that the unit can play to its advantage. The flipside is that sight bonus and accuracy bonus can't overlap: If it's outside your normal rookie-level sight range, you can still hit it, but you lose the accuracy bonus you would have by fighting at your normal range (also note, the opponent's Evasion bonus still applies).

How about combine your two suggestions into something that makes far more sense:
Experienced sensor units get better range.

This would give me a real reason to use sensor units over towers.

Hadn't thought of that.

Sight range bonus would definitely help the commanders out though - the basic command turret has a rated range of 12 squares, but you only get that with maximum sensor upgrades.
