PPA is last resort, or target for testing versions (although current testing line should by anyway considered as current (most) stable one ;-)), we should force them to update their package to at least stable one and such non core packages should be updated when new upstream version is available (after short period in backports), like they do for example with Firefox (as in worst case they won't break other things - but FIrefox updates can or at least could break others in the past, as Gecko was used in other applications, AFAIR Yelp from GNOME2 once postponed Firefox update in Mandriva, due to changes in Gecko). So first we would need to contact maintainers of Debian package and ask why they didn't even updated to 2.3.9...

Oh, I agree with you there. I've had several cases of auto-update breaking a program that previously ran without a hitch. Simplified and easy manual update (and the ability to revert if you choose) is nice though.

This conversation is becoming more interesting than I expected, and that's good in my opinion.

I think auto-update can be thought of many different ways and may have been taken too literally for the most part.

For a good working auto-update we should look at it this way.
1. Game starts and checks if there is an update.
2. Update? Yes, alert user and find out whats next.
3. Download? Yes, game downloads and installs update (the auto part)

The only games that need a fully automated update system are going to be MMOs that require all clients to be running the same version of the software in order to work.

I only see this needing to be done with WZ if/when WZ goes from a peer-peer model to a client/server model, and even then only if each download contains the client and server as seperate apps, which I don't see happening unless WZ goes a bit MMO.
