is there a mod out there to cure the idiotic pathing of units i would really like to see it

nope - not yet...
‎"to prepare for disaster is to invite it, to not prepare for disaster is a fools choice" -me (kim-lav_coyote25-metcalfe) - it used to be attributed to unknown - but adding the last bit , it now makes sense.

such a thing must be fixed in the engine code -- mods can't do that.

If you know how to fix the problem, any help would be appreciated.

This game was originally made a long time ago, and it had to work on a PSX also.
We don't have that limitation anymore, but we don't really have any people that can fix the AI either at this time.  The main guy doing AI stuff is very busy, and this project isn't his #1 priority at this time.
