Take a peak at this nice indie release. http://dear-esther.com/ watch the youtube video.

Got a 30k loan from http://indie-fund.com/ and looks like they have sold 100k units on Steam sine Feb. 14th of this year. This should also be a good lesson for those debating in the contingency campaign thread.

Wow... impressive all around.... Don't think Retail WZ even got close to that in unit sales.

If I can check it out without getting tied up to the Steam client I will. :3

There is indeed a Steam & DRM free version. I'm lovin it. I even dled the original script pdf from the original HL2 Mod from 2008. Facinating. Thanks for the heads up. Trully an extraordinary project by the chineseroom Team.... in every aspect of development.

WZ isn't mainstream anymore for one (no marketing beyond word of mouth), the game is nearly 13 years old, RTS genre isn't as popular as it was then... I could probably name some more reasons but i think those three should suffice.

Do you think if WZ had sold 5 million units between April '99 - July '99 it would have been canceled and Pumpkin terminated..?

Those unit sales include bargin bin blow outs for 5 bucks for years after the game was canceled.

The unit sales for the first 4 months of release.... THAT is the magic number. ;)

5 million @ $40.00 US.... that would have been franchise $$. WZ 2120, WZ 2140...... not cancellation-termination. With $ 200 Million in revenues WZ would have been one of the all time best selling games in the entire history of comp/vid games. That, it absolutely is not.

I love WZ as much as anyone still around - warts and all. But that love doesnot mean I am unware of it's grave shortfalls.

That said, the 5 million is usefull as a basis for another interpretation of WZ's popularity or appeal.... but that may be fodder for another thread. :hmm:

The tale of RTS popularity told in the round:

Starcraft 2: Fastest selling PC game in all genres

A Lesson In Free Strategy Game Popularity

Bestselling PC Games List

A fair number of RTS on the Best Selling List. But no WZ. That's because bargain bin blow-out unit sales are not counted. Original retail price sales - that's what's factored.

5 Million unit sales - mostly bargain bin blow out sales for that WZ #.

Two questions come to mind about that 5 mil #:

1.) Why no groundswell of interest with that number of units out there..?

2.) With that 5 mil #, why has not Eidos expressed the slightest interest in resurrecting the franchise (even with all the exposure of FOSSing the original)..?

The answers to these questions are tightly related.
