Regarding Research

Post by ermns »

Hello :)

I started playing WZ just a few days ago, and I am thrilled!!
I was a big Earth 2150 series fun. That game in its age really rocked and it had some novelties that even today's games don't have.

A lot of the features (and much more) of the E2150 series I was very glad to find in WZ, such as the tech tree and unit design.

One of the things that really rocks is definitely the tech tree. It's really awesome.
On the other hand for new players like me, it's a bit intimidating.

My suggestion comes from the Earth 2150 series.
In that game the tech tree, was not at all the size of WZ, but when you clicked on research you were able to see the whole research tree and click on a "target". Let's say Heavy laser. Then the computer would mark the path with numbers indicating the sequence in which it would research in order to reach the goal. This way you were assured that you would follow the shortest path towards your goal, and you were also able to change the order of the researches if that was possible. The first game I have seen this, was back in 1994-95, with a game called ascendancy.

Anyway that's my thoughts regarding the tech tree.

ps. totally off topic.. Would it be impossible to create a repository so that the game is updated automatically for linux owners?

The ubuntu repo is always behind if you wanted to update as versions come out its prolly best to just download the latest tarball.
When you have all the libs installed its easy matter of just cd to folder and do ./autogen.sh then do ./configure && make
Bingo all done
Another way is to use the git repo but thats hard for non clever folks so lest you have a clever folks to guide you best use the tarball.

Also inspired by that specific game. ;-)
In one of the posts there is description how it could be done so everybody would be still happy (so, do not let to only specify goal and make it all research automatically, at least not by default), with possible design of UI.

These are really awesome Aubergine :)
They are very helpful. I can have them on my second screen on my computer.

But I am sure that you agree that having them inside the game, especially if you can set goals, it would be much more helpful.
