Give players a higher degree of control over structures.

Post by Shadow Wolf TJC »

While we've always had a high degree of control over our own units, being able to tell them where to go, what to attack, or what health to retreat at (not many other rts games out there have as great, or better, level of control as Warzone 2100), sadly, no such control exists for our structures. Sure, they can't move to a new location, but we could still tell them what to attack, whether to fire at will, return fire, or hold fire, assign them into control groups (like in StarCraft 2), or, in the case of artillery structures, assign them to a (or perhaps even more than one) specific sensor, commander, etc. For example, we could assign a LasSat Command Post to one group, and when it's fully charged, we could select that LasSat Command Post without having to scroll over it and select it with the mouse. Instead, we could use a hotkey to select it. We could also assign one group of artillery structures (like, say, our Ground Shaker Emplacements) to one or more sensor vehicles for offensive purposes, another group (like, say, our Hellstorm Emplacements) to all of our Sensor Towers for perimeter defense, and yet another group (like, say, our Archangel Missile Batteries) to all of our CB Towers for counter-battery work.

For multiple factories that are selected at a time, we could have them build from a single shared queue, where if the factory isn't already busy producing something, it'll automatically start building the unit that's next in sequence (or closest to it if the factory doesn't have enough modules) in the shared production queue. Also, to simplify the task of placing rally points, we could automatically place a factory's or repair facility's rally point onto whatever spot on the ground we left or right-clicked. (If we're to be able to assign multiple rally points to a single location, we may have to do away with all those decals in favor of drawing straight lines (or parabolic arcs if the terrain would obstruct sight to the line) from the factory or repair facility to the rally point. We'll only need them to be visible if we have the structure(s) in question selected.)

I like most of those ideas, especially ability to select attack mode for defenses, that would allow to use some more advanced tactics which could let to give units more experience when their firepower is enough and don't let structures steal and waste that. ;-)

That is a good idea.

Base artillery can already be called by commanders. Not sure about sensor units but I think they have that option in the right click menu.

Players could indeed control artillery structures indirectly by assigning Commanders fire support, but I'd much rather prefer to control them directly, like any other unit, since it would've been much more simple and convenient.

Its an interesting idea but isn't that just adding more management to the player than some or many can handle? At least in regards to controling base bunkers/hardpoints?

I'm not terribly experienced, but from what I can tell, they could be left at the current behavior by default, and adding this will only serve to add more depth.

Lord Apocalypse, it would behave like currently until someone would want to control it, such possibilities wouldn't be probably used very often anyway.

I believe that Emdek and ShadowMan42 already stated what I'd want to state. It's just adding more control, not more micromanagement requirements.

I can imagine a great deal of opportunity if these features were added and then exposed via the JS API thus allowing AIs and modified rules.js to do some interesting stuff.
