I would argue that urban needs to be dark because of all the scorching that went on during the nukes and it made things very dirty.
Arizona can regenerate much faster than stone, that is why it is lighter looking.

Re: Trees
Yes, but Warzone is set after the nuclear winter ends:
January 2086: Nuclear winter starts
April 2088: Nuclear winter ends
April 2100: Campaign 1 starts
So there will be sunlight beaming down on the earth and even if it's scorched, it will still be lighter than what we have in the game.
If users are maxing their monitor brightness/contrast to see what's going on, why not just make the game a bit lighter to save them having to do that?

Emm, the only problem is that we'd have to wait for 3.2 ...NoQ wrote:Growing trees are not a problem. As soon as somebody does several tree models of different size, we can use JS to switch them.

A nuclear burned down forest, where the tree are dead, the ground is cover with nuclear ash is equal destroyed as the city, I think.crass wrote:I would argue that urban needs to be dark because of all the scorching that went on during the nukes and it made things very dirty.

But the nuclear bombs hit the cities so maybe a bit more nuclear in the cities. BUT in the city the concrete has protected the soil so microorganism can have survived better.
If you look att the Russian city Chernobyl that -86 was exposed to nuclear. The town looks more like a forest today, than a city on many places today. It grows fast.
If we look at the Japanese cities Nagasaki and Hiroshima, that actually are the only 2 cities today that have been bombed with nuclear, both citys was green just some yeras after the blast.
The bombs that struck in the game was bigger, and there was more than one, making it harder for fresh life to come in from around, but still, nature are faster then we think.
If ppl have a hard time seeing the maps in the game and ppl have to change the light on the screen to play the game, it's a dam good reasons to do something about it. (?)
And if ther are probebly corse that its greener then we think, the story can work anyway.
Why not have more scrap on the streets in the urban maps, like burnt out cars, restaurants, shops, and so on, that make the feeling "darker".
But I'm just a game, not the owner of the game.

Re: Trees
A picture of what being spoken about.
After long discussion about "green city" / "not green city", I decided try to make my first map. Sad to say, the FlaME program did not work 100% on my computer (in the thread about FlaME, I have reported that the texture picture is ALWAYS at the left in the HMI). After 2-3 hours learning the program and with the error (for example, I can't use objects I want, so the log buildings in the harbour, shall be magasin buildings, made of Iron) I haven't been able to do the map I want, there for it is not yet done (if it ever be done), but I wanted to tell u how I see it, this time with a picture. The feeling of abandoned city, and that nature that has taken over is there I think ?
It's also interesting to see that the blue sky in the background makes the urban map not that dark, something we also have talked about.
We have to imagine that this is a harbor town, wasn't directly hit by the nuclear bomb. The heat wave and the blast, that is the most direct physical destruction of a nuclear bomb, did not reach out to this harbor town (much more house will be put into the map by the way). This harbor town "only" have been reached by the radiant wave (that has a much bigger radius), that have killed all living life, made ppl leave the town at it was, and now the nature have taken over. Some kind of destruction from the war have hit the town, the highway have a nasty crater (the other "crater" is supposed to look and work as a entry to a car tunnel under the highway. Dose it work ?)
I shell not talk more about map making here. ( I have already miss used this thread from being about trees, to now being about the whole ecosystem and the light in the sky) Just wanted to put a picture on the words I have sad in this thread.
The forest taking over, and the blue sky that make the map easier to play.
(all the thing in the map, will make it hard for the player to directly attack, a lot of time will be used to clear the map, something I aware of.)
If any further discussion in the subject "green urban maps" better continue in a new thread.

Re: Trees
That's looking like it's going to be a really interesting map design, I hope you continue with the map and complete it! It looks like you're using a big crater to give the impression of a tunnel which is something I've not seen before!
In terms of a nuked city, even where the nuke does directly hit wouldn't be overly dark - it would be more of a grey colour from all the ash and rubble. And even in such terrible place nature would still start to grow back with trees and grass.
