Graphics Card Recommendation

Hi folks,
I've been playing the 2.X branch happily with my GeForce9500GT (Athlon 7750, 8GB, Ubuntu 10.10, Nvidia driver 260.19.06).
Now I tried the latest master release, and

1. it does not look very good - low contrast, exit points are barely recognizable, some unit color blend with the landscape

and, more important,

2. it is simply not playable in 1680x1050 - well it is to some extent, in XP, but I don't want to reboot each time I play. And issue #1 also holds true for XP.

So my questions are:
Will it look better with a contemporary graphics card?
Which card can you recommend for a good frame rate in Ubuntu?

Thanks in advance

Joe

AFAIK it is not that your card is that slow of a card. I have a gtx 240 1gb and it still is slow for me. The problem is the rendering engine used in the game is rather old and unoptimized.

The best things I can suggest are:

1. Turn off v-sync in options
2. Close other running programs
3. Turn down the texture size to 256

I have a far worse graphics card, also Nvidia, and it works fine here, so I do not understand what is causing the slowdown. Vsync on or off does not matter for me.

What card and OS do you have?

From the parallel discussion in the master release thread, I was assured that something was wrong with my settings. I deleted the .warzone2100-master directory to start with a fresh config: Hooray! Now it runs as smooth as 2.3.8, and now it also looks great again!
No need for a new graphics card anymore, but thanks to all who answered anyway!

Hmm, I wonder what setting that was ?
I am guessing texture size ?

p.s, that card should be OK for now. :)

No, it must have been a side effect of some kind. In addition to the performance problem, I got weird colors, and the numbers in the rally points were not readable (I posted a screenshot in the masters release thread). Finally, I wasn't able to adjust the screen size in the video options, so I deleted the config directory. If it is of interest for the developers, I can compare the new config with the one from my last backup.

This is a known issue, there's a ticket somewhere with a patch which mitigates this issue.
