What about the slideshows Ive mentioned at the other topic about FMVs? It wouldn't take as much time as making full animations. Something about zooming maps with voice briefing. If we don't use the green thingy at the start, new paradigm logo, collective logo or NEXUS's head, it wouldn't be a copy of pumpkin studios work. It would already accomplish the objective of briefing the player and showing the maps. If we want eyecandy, we should care about remodelling.

The script came with the source code right? So we can get someone to reread the script for an audio recording. The original audio we can't use but we can create new audio because the script was released along with wz. Then just create new FMV.

Do we have any writers/storytellers here? Maybe someone can come up with a new/different story that can explain the current campaign mode. Then create new FMV & audio to go along with the new story.

The FMVs were not distributed with the source for a very specific reason...

well, it's understandable why they'd be that way: they couldn't care less about the video content, but don't want to put in the effort to re-encode the videos in another format for our use, but at the same time don't want anyone to subvert their format lest the format loses it's propriety, and thus the easiest option available to them is just to deny us any legal ability to distribute the videos.

anyways... its going in circles again... lets just do the new thing and be done with it.

That is exactly what I was thinking in my previous post.

OK, this time with the whole quote.

There is no explicit (maybe implicit, but in these days of IP-nazis, some paranoia seems quite reasonable) permission to redistribute the old videos.

But the quote was about new videos. And I'd guess anyone making new videos would also give permission to distribute those. That's all I wanted to say.

But creating new FMVs based on the old ones is copyright infringement!

I agree with Coyote, this is going in circles!

Indeed...
To me the problem is that we can't easily get a RPL player. If we can, good. (And I may have heard about someone investigating...)
Convert RPL -> Theora and distribute that? No good. Copyright and stuff. About people doing that themselves or getting them hell knows where? I don't mind, just keep me out of the latter.
New ones? Good. Everyone can get them. This is what we need, imo.

point in fact, numerous people have mentioned that the campaigns really aren't worth the effort without fmv's and many have mentioned that potential new players are waiting to start until fmvs are available -- i've got a friend who said the same thing. so one way or another, we do need fmv's, and yes, the only real option that anyone can use would be fmv's created from scratch.
