Not so wrong. Even though the voice in the tutorial is raised by the scripting engine it could work very similar in a cutscene-voiceover, I think.

Gerard was allready working on this and afaik he got:
- Text (Well, that was present before allready)
- Images (Backdrops)
- Audio (Voice/music possible)
- Basic video support
- All in sync

What is "missing":
- Special effects like image panning/blending or sound panning/blending(aka crossfading)

Correct me if I am wrong...

you can find the collective comms movie here : http://lab.wz2100.net/fmvs/collective2.avi
Thanx to kamaze for FTP !

The sparks and the red glow:star effects still need a little work. Since this movie isn't as close to the original as the previous ones, plz give me extensive feedback if you got some remarks. Hope u like it !

I don't know the "original", but this one is definitely nice!

In the original, there where ork-like hands holding the ring.

That's right and no firy sparks but unless someone volunteers to model the hands it's going to stay this way.

Where did you get that from ? i thought the original movies were rendered in 320*240. This stillshot looks awesome. CAN ANYONE MODEL THE HANDS ?

not sure - but its in the folder i have of all the concept drawings and art stuff. ;D

i was thinking - a little bit of judicious cut and paste...you wouldnt have to model the hands. ;)

patience and the original game.... taking individual screen shots... and then using again a lot of patience and paintshop-pro 7  - i would love to have a better program but my old mind isnt up to the learning curve. ;D

anyone who uses anything with X as a backend should really look at xwd, which is the standard screen grabbing util (as well as its corresponding raster format) -- since the x protocol *requires* the ability for an authorized program to query the pixmap of any window (including the root window), it doesn't matter whether it's vanilla x, opengl, xv, or whatever, it just works (one or two exceptions being stuff like fbdev, which kind of cheats, and bypasses x).

in regards to your take on the collective movie, i think you've got a great bit of creativity there, and you should continue to explore it, as everything you've done is stuff people usually get paid good money for. i think it'd look a little better, though, if you made the parts of the parts that connect to the ring (what you used in place of hands) somewhat "bulky" -- perhaps looking as though they are separate machines (kind of like engines, perhaps not symmetrical in shape, and perhaps with a pipe or two going out of and then back into the "engine") that are pulling themselves around the ring, rather than getting rotated around by something behind the eye. i don't know if it'd look good or not, as it's just a vague image in my mind. sparks are a great idea. i'm thinking if we darken the whole thing so it's pitch black, make the whole mesh kind of shiny and semi-reflective (with some parts more reflective than others), and then the sparks provide every bit of light (kind of white-yellow-ish) until the "hands" stop rotating, at which point it's completely dark again until the eye opens, and then the whole thing is lit from the red glow of the eye. i think this would look good, but i don't know how hard it would be, as i can't even come close to achieving that cool red light corona thing you did, much less with that level of competency.

i can take a shot at modeling the hands... as much as i'd like to just clone that vid, we are an independent project, so i think i might try something that looks a little different, but has the same motif.

Crossfading could be implemented rather easy. Simply having a piece of sound maintenance code which is called every frame to lower the volume a bit on sound source one and increase it on source two should pull it off (human hearing is, to my knowledge, hardly sensitive enough to notice "choppy" volume drops/rises when framerates are at least 10 or so).

Does that mean you took the original cutscenes and took screenshots of them? Then those nice images are out allready. Taking screenshots of movies and distributing them is probably a violation of copyright law. (Or whatever else applies)
If you only took them from the game, then it probably would have to be redone using the current game, since the original (1.x) is imo not "yet" free. I think it would be considered a seperate work, different from anything created out of the GPLed sources.
