Project is a mess
Re: Project is a mess
This is no image board, the party is over.
We all have the same heaven, but not the same horizon.
Re: Project is a mess
I know, don't feed the troll... but I would just like to point out a few things.Terk wrote:Seriously, what are you guys doing to this once great game?
1.1 was pretty playable and workable, I did have a few crashes here and there, but nothing like what is going on now.
Then you guys made 2.0, got into linux sh*t, then the crashes started to roll in, and the horrible artifacts started from the switch from microsoft directx to opengl. Sound was worse, from directplay to openal, chokes on big battles, font looked like original (YA!).
2.0.1 - 2.0.10 still crash prone compared to 1.1, no fixes for artifacts, ever think of switching back to directx? Sounds is still crap, should have switch to directplay again! Net battles suck!
2.1 New font sucks! (BOO!) Sound engine sill sucks, crackling and hissing on big battles. Net battles still suck!
2.1.3 was better than 2.1, but not by much. Still had bad case of artifacts. Font still sucks! Sound still sucks! Net battles still suck!
2.2.0 was a slight improvement over 2.1, but a bit worse than 2.1.3, and still had bad case of artifacts. Font still sucks! Sound still sucks! Net battles still suck!
2.2.1 finally fixed the artifacts, only took more than a freaking year! But wait, we now get more crashes instead of artifacts.Font sucks! Sound still sucks! Net battles still suck!
Is there no quality control anymore or what? Looks like everyone is doing whatever they want, and be dammed with the shape of the game.
Was there a internal fight between windows developers, and the linux ones, and all the windows ones split? Can't say I blame them!
Was the change from windows the root cause? If so, screw them! Bring it back to windows only, it will be more stable than the trash opensource sh*t you guys use now instead of the original microsoft directx and directplay!
Who is in control of the project, pushing out rubbish releases? There should be no releases until your certain it does not crash , and be more like 1.1!
Thanks for including a AUTHORS file, it shows people who to avoid. I bet pumpkin is shocked at the sorry state the game is in!
A) Pumpkin has Eidos QC department, and we have users, like you to do QC for us.
If you don't help the project, then well... it is your own fault for not reporting good bug reports.
B) The change in API from MS's proprietary direct X to the open standard openGL does *NOT* cause more crashes per se. The problem here is that Intel/S3/VIA are known to have terrible openGL support. Nvida & ATI(AMD) are much better than them, but they still can have issues from time to time. Everyone should report bugs to them as well.
C) The game is still basically the same, and once the decision was made to do away with the custom memory pools, it showed lots of really ugly warts. The bugs were always in the game, but they were masked. That isn't to say that we haven't introduced our own bugs, but again, we rely on the community to help us find the bugs. We just don't have the manpower to do everything.
D) directplay is for networking. OpenAL is for sound. The two don't mix.
E) Yes, everyone does what they want on a OPEN project. NOBODY is getting paid to do anything.
F) If you want to help, then fine, help, but no use bitching about it, without giving us bug reports so we can fix the issues.
Have a nice day.
and it ends here.
