Why bother with normal maps right now? IMHO just clean up the code and then use a 3d engine with normal map support ;)

Hmm I fear that it would still require a lot of work and time, compared to what per is doing now. Irrlicht does of course seem to be an excellent 3d engine, although I don't know what its performance would be in an rts...
On the other hand I don't know what impact per's new shading code has on the performance either.
