In this mission (BETA CAM_2END I have the screenshot briefing saying
"Evacuate!"

So I loaded the only four vehicles (that I have not yet recycled) on the flight, sent them away. The cargo flies out of screen...nothing else happens.
I keep receiving attacks from incoming enemy flights and airplanes.

Should I stay and defend instead?

Yes, you have to survive the 30 minutes. The transport will come back each 8-9 minutes, so you send up to 40 units. And you will want that since these are the units you gonna get on the next stage, and you must have at least one truck to build your base. The next mission is hard, so the more you have the better.
