So, what does everyone think of SteamOS ?
It is going to be a (free) OS that can be used to play all your games.

Does it have potential ?
Does anyone play WZ on the "big screen" ?

This could be the big push the publishers need to develop more games that support OSX, Win32/64, and Linux. Now.. if only the OpenGL committee and the devs from directx can make it easier to code for both. Or better yet Intel can get off their butts and give everyone better opengl performance and stability with their drivers.

.

Video game consoles have been banned since 2000 in China, a vast market to say the least. This would blur one of the hardest lines between console and comp games.... display device.

Inside Gamasutra just published this article on 9/25/13:

"Valve's answer to game consoles: Steam Machines"

http://inside.gamasutra.com/cgi-bin4/DM ... in0M4hu0Ep

Don't think the semantics will fly with the China regime now that they've suggested a dedicated box for their OS and seeking to put it on a par with MS's X-Box and Sony's Playstation. The new question becomes for me -

"Is this really a brilliant marketing move - Steam Machines ?"

Well the linux community has wanted steam and win32 game ports for ages. OSX gets windows game but poor linux gets left in the dark. Now that OSX is based off the unix/linux style kernel I don't see why more developers haven't already ported more AAA titles over.

If it does happen though.. More money for Valve from PC gamers, and having a linux driven PC console in the living room may draw some or many console gamers away and back to PC land.

All in all a possible hugecash windfall if they succeed and not much lost if they shot themselves in the foot. At least with the new hardware. The OS itself should be a hit as the linux community should be able to use the new OS to better tune the codebase for better gaming performance.

I think the Gamasutra discussion after the announcement (in the link above) covered all the permutations (or possible outcomes). Highly engaging conversation. Learned a fair bit I was unfamiliar with. Worth the time spent. :3

I hope Valve win this OS race. Cause I don't like windows, I dont like OSx, I don't like EA politics & how they doing business. :ninja:

Would be nice if they allowed you to install it where you want, instead of formatting everything... I'll pass, and wait for a better release.
