What sequence makes the most sense ?

Depends what you're trying to achieve.

There are some common patterns though, such as:

* MC: Machine guns and cannons
* MR: Machine guns and rockets
* FR: Flamer and rockets

If you look at source code to Nullbot AI you can get some idea of the researches involved for each strategy. I'm not sure if anyone has documented the research paths for these strategies anywhere.

Some people just didn't know about that

it is a mad rush to cannons with lots of flamers

Do the latter unless you can die if you don't.
Figuring out if you die if you don't takes experience (understanding the game timing and evaluating how it interacts with map size, understanding enemy strategies and the situation on the board).
