You'll probably be best served by using WMIT to convert to/from .OBJ files:

I think, WMIT should be added to download section as the official modding tool. We don't have anyting better anyway. :-)

I plan to build it to include in distribution...

Can you add a readme in there?
Is this tool still of good use or has it been replaced by WMIT?
