Because it isn't a very good organised wiki and it doesn't have all type of information.Berg wrote:Again the off site storing of warzone info idea shows up ....why cant you use the wz2100.net wiki
Like i said before whats wrong with maintaining the already wz2100.net wiki http://developer.wz2100.net/wiki/WikiStart
There is so much already there why spread it out to off site projects that someone else has control of and if you piss on their parade they ban the use of it like what just happened.
Like some one said before it has happened in the past and it will happen again.
My two cents worth.
What happened to aubergine's Warzone 2100 Wiki?

Would it be a difficult operation to start/transfer Shadow Wolf's wiki on this site though?

Then add the info.Giani wrote:Because it isn't a very good organised wiki and it doesn't have all type of information.
You should be able to create pages if you want to start adding.. Everyone is waiting for someone else to do this wiki and doing it off site is a waste of resources when they all here for you to use...Because you see a link in front of your face you say ooo loook thats good ...but if you look about this stuff is already here.Conor wrote:Would it be a difficult operation to start/transfer Shadow Wolf's wiki on this site though?

I will take "badly organized" over "not there" any day.Because it isn't a very good organised wiki and it doesn't have all type of information.

Re: What happened to aubergine's Warzone 2100 Wiki?
Yeah, best to keep all documented features, canon, etc. stored with the project itself rather than something offsite. If Vega Strike were to lose its wiki http://wiki.vega-strike.org/Main_Page a lot of information about timelines, species, etc would be lost and possibly only a tenth of that could be recovered from 10 years of forum posts.
Shadow, trying to rebuild what was lost with the passing of aubergine's wiki is a great project to work on, but its better served (for the community) on this site. Should something happen to the wikia page (unlikely but there is always that possibility) then you, or the community, would have to start all over.
Starting from the retail code, i'm sure there was a lot of useful information that could have been added to aubergine's wiki to rediscover parts of the retail history many of us have forgotten since all of the advances the current (and past) dev team has released since 05.
Let us hope that his departure is not like the departure I remember when Rman first left the WZ community (and NEWST) so long ago.

Yeah, I'm also against such "outsourcing", it's better to have own stuff on own server (and backup it regularly of course
).

Thinking about it... I wonder if his wiki page went dead (among other dominoes) and it finally broke the camels back so to speak.

Re: What happened to aubergine's Warzone 2100 Wiki?
Hi,
Sorry, I was mid way through making some changes to the wiki when I rage quit. I didn't mean to take it offline, I was just part way through updating settings and locked it temporarily to prevent anyone from losing edits/updates they might do while I was messing with settings, then rage quit and forgot to re-enable the privs.
I chose that particular wiki host for several reasons, including knowing their CEOs and lots of their developers due to 7 year business relationship, the fact that they've been committed to and contributing to FOSS community since day 1, and the fact that they will keep providing money-free and advert-free hosting and support and upgrades of that wiki so long as people are using it. I'm more than happy to give some people full admin rights on that site so they can maintain it should I die or rage quit again
As for the rage quit, it was over my plans to launch a WZ magazine to raise funds for doing an iPad port of WZ, with the port being GPLv2 and completely free so that all code could be put back in to the main branch...
I was told that I needed the express written permission of someone, who is unfortunately dead, before being able to port to iPad otherwise there would be copyright complaints. I went ballistic and decided to just unplug before spewing the forums with bile (I did make one bile-post prior to self-Darwining but thankfully a mod quickly deleted it).

aubergine, so, will you stay with us?
And now I finally see context of that deleted post, without it it was really weird.

Whew, you had us all (well most of us
) worried there for a bit dude.
Sorry to hear about the copyright issues.
I can rant quite a bit about Apple and MS myself, I'm continually having to stop myself...
All the best, whether you stay or go. (Though I hope you stay of course.

Very good article indeedJDW wrote:@ Berg : Nice work! http://developer.wz2100.net/wiki/AniFormat
@aubergine: Good to see you're ok. I totally understand the frustration for a highly ambitious person such as you. Being stopped by an artificial barrier set up just because someone doesn't like open source is never fun...
Also nice to see the wiki back online, I was very confused about why you would want to delete it but now all makes sense.

Hi, Good to hear from you!
(But somehow I knew you'll return to answer).
In the spirit of open source, why not make an android port instead?
Do you still have the motivation to stay active on this project?
