It's not only a bad idea because of asymmetry, it's also a bad idea because of the snowballing effect of making rich players richer and discouraging them from spending their money on fighting. You would be able to turtle up and multiply your power exponentially without leaving your base - and that's not going to be fun.

Re: The Oil Searching and Digging Unit/s ?!
I love the idea with random oilfield, I even suggest random maps, hopefully we're not all mountain ends up on top of all oil field. With that I'm joining Iluvalar concern and saying that it will be really hard to make a good random map where all player get the same chance on.
(If any one will do a random map I suggest that it is for 2 or 4 players. That it makes a 1/2 or 1/4 random map and then copy and mirror it to the other players.)
What can be used for the oil field is an option at the start of the game, like the power option today, that say how big in size and how big in amount the oil field will be. This can make the game interesting. By making the oil field small u have to fight for them, but by making them big u have to build many to pump up the oil that is, before the other players take it.
To make the game even more interesting (read complicated) is to have to build oil tanks to store the oil in, and that u have to defend, or the other player can steal oil och destroy the oil for u.
Maybe even oil trucks (instead of invisible unicorns
) for the transport of the oil from the derricks to the oil tanks. But this will make the game more like the game Settler

Re: The Oil Searching and Digging Unit/s ?!
Oil tanks is a very bad idea on a gameplay perspective, as we already said elsewhere, players with extra oil did an error somewhere. They are not stronger, they are weaker (less research, less units than another player with the same production but without extra power). It's just plain illogical to make players pay to be weaker.
I'll repeat that one again : warzone2100 is a old game, well know and well appreciated. There is about no chances that you will introduce a game changing concept at that point. If you want such feature to be in the game, it must be ignorable by players that don't want to get into that new feature. For that to be true, those oil searching units gonna need to be extremely expensive.
For exemple. if Hardened Base Structure Materials Mk2 increase only your structure from 240 to 275 (10%) with 250$ , than adding 1 oil derrick out of the 10 you already have that increase structure, droids and research all together gonna need to be a lot more expensive in order to not be a forced path on anyone. at least 400$ a piece.
Dont get me wrong here : I'm not opposed to oil digging stuff at those condition. However, I believe I showed that lot less complex alternative power sources is designable in NRS without being that much complicated to implement : nuclear, solar banks, paradox lab, interest rate, housings, civilians, parks. Are all power sources in that mod...
I'm also considering junk yards for the scavenger set right now...

Iluvalar, yes, such change would affect game play too much, if added as default feature, although there should be always open possibilities to add such things as mod, if someone would decide to work on it.

Do we bury it again?
