Requested features list

Post by ratarf »

OpenTTD, another great open-source game I play, has a GREAT system for tracking 'requested features'. I'm not going to waste too much space here, just have a look at it and it will be clear: http://wiki.openttd.org/wiki/index.php/ ... d_features

If I remember correctly, we don't have such a thing for the warzone project. It looks like it's quite a job to maintain such a list. But in my opinion it will REALLY help to maintain an overview.

It could be a replacement for this thread: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1267 (The warzone 2100 Wishlist). To be honest, I don't think anyone bothers to read this thread anymore. Players just dump their ideas on top of the pile. And there are maybe 100 great ideas there... ;)

*Clean, structured information, I love it*

Well, we have http://wiki.wz2100.net/Category:Proposals This is a wiki page, so feel free to clean it up.

What I would like to see is something more like https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/10/FeatureList Fedora have a very nice system for handling feature requests, plans and works in progress.

Looks nice also, although I like the colored progress indicators on the OpenTTD page :). Maybe I'll try something (in the wiki) if I have more free time, but at the moment this is unfortunately not an option.

Because I don't have access to the wiki right now (see viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2250), I created a conceptual preview of how I would want a feature tracker for warzone to look. Please have a good look at it and give some feedback. I'm 100% sure that warzone needs something like this.

Looks promising. I assume each feature would also have its own page for more in detail discussion and planning.

Indeed, see the "Gates" feature for example. Clicking on 'topic' takes you straight to the topic.

I've mirrored that page here:
http://celerisdrive.com/wz/suggestions.php

(I'm pleased with how it turned out - all I did was change some h1's to h3's and make a few spelling corrections. Oh, the magic of CSS!)

How would you like your suggestion list to be hosted on the [still-incomplete] Warzone Guide? It has its own scheme to edit files, like a wiki, but you need to be an administrator to edit it.

This is really nice! I didn't bother using any css or tight layout because it was only a concept, but the way it turned out after you edited it is simply great. ;)

It seems like a good idea to have it hosted on your website. Especially with the edit system. Looking forward to try it! Only problem here: if editing requires administrator access, who will update it? I don't have the time to keep it updated all the time. Maybe there should be a few people (e.g. 4 or 5) that have edit permissions on the list?

The commentary system looks nice, but I don't think it's a good idea to use this; Most people will post their suggestions here on the forum. The only thing we can ask people to do is post their feature requests here on the warzone forum, one at the time, most preferably under 'General Development'. We'll just link to the topics and/or wiki articles that discuss or explain the feature.

It's nice to see someone further exploring this idea. I really hope to see this work soon!

Nice website by the way, it's the first time I see it!

Feedback?

Well...
Hmm, celerisdrive.com isn't loading right now.

The computers that run celerisdrive.com are having some trouble. Usually this is just a temporary problem, so you might want to try again in a few minutes.
the mirror is down.

For that list, are you going to parse the 'wishlist' threads, and pull things from there, or do you want people to enter new things in your list?
Something like, telling people to do
[wish] ... [/wish] then you can get a script that parses that info...

Celeris Drive is up, here. Either it fixed itself in the last 7 minutes, or Site5 went and blocked another IP address for fun. I'm gonna go switch my servers soon.

Well, I'm not sure how I want to do it yet. Anyway, people aren't expected to enter suggestion directly in the list. Players can post their suggestions in the forum, and if they are considered 'valid' for the list, they'll be put there with a link to the topic. I don't know who would be responsible for the list... A wiki-like system might work, but it will need some moderation.

Since there are so many useful suggestions in the wishlist thread(s), I do want to parse them too. Once more players know about the list and like the idea, I'll bet filling the list won't be a problem. But first things first, we need a working 'prototype', so we, and other players, can test it.

So that brings me to the next point: Zarel, is there any way you can give permission to edit just that one page with the suggestions on your website? And are you still interested in hosting it? Don't feel obligated to do this. ;) I'll find another way if I have to, but it seems like a good idea to have it hosted on your website.

It's no wiki - permission won't be given to just anyone. Instead, permission will be given to anyone who asks.
