(This was PMed to me.)

See, this is the kind of thing that should be posted to the forums, not PMed. I'm sure a lot of other people are interested on the status of spec mode and replays.

Can I suggest, if it's workable, to add two observer spots to each existing map. Maybe not directly, just have the game open two more slots per map anytime a game is hosted. Asking tons, I know.
The way I'm planning on doing it, is to have 6 spectator slots on 2P maps, 4 slots on 4P maps, and no slots on 8P maps. This is mostly because Warzone only supports 8 players max, by default.

The interface will probably be done by having an spectator "team", yes.

What about having the game record a log of player's actions during a game. Then save that log as a *.rpl. Then run the action logs back through the AI. When a players loads a *.rpl have the game remove the victory condition for all non AI players, and turn all player spots into observers.
The problem is that Warzone just isn't deterministic enough for that - it can be affected by things as minor as the framerate, which we can't control. If you replay a game doing exactly the same things, you might not get exactly the same result, even if you store the random seed you use..

I think a "spectator mode" is a nice thing to learn from others, while they are playing. It's more an FPS feature, but it helps alot sometimes. Sure you could be an evil guy, seeking your favourite noob or pwner to study his specific strategies, but thet's another story... ;)

As for the replays some of the "elders" might remember a racing game called "4D Sports Driving", better known as "Stunts". It had also a replay feature, wich didn't work so nice either, due to the slightly different calculations made when drifting. suddenly the car was driving far away from the road just crashing into the fence (The map border). I imagine bad calculations done in the replay sending units somewhere, because of the pathfinding. If you send a truck to build something and it gets stuck in the replay, "something" maybe important in that match won't be built and you will loose in the replay even if you have won the match for example...

Just some thoughts I had right now... :)
