Originally Pumpkin had plans to have Research Facilities be able to specialize in different topics. Instead of a generic research module, you would add on different specialty labs. This feature never made it into the game.

yep. in the concept artwork that's listed as the power *something* lab (the filename indicates that it is the 'pwer research lab').

* While the Nano Tech Lab structure never made it into the game.... an iteration of Nano Technology did make it into game-play for one patch and then was subsequently turned-off in the next... mainly because it was automated and players wanted to control how it was deployed.

* Should be revisited sometime, IMHO.
