Easy to use Hightmap Editor

Post by MetalBeast »

Hi,

since I was active in the Q3-based game modding scene for years, I have one nice tool for you.
Easygen is a hightmap and terrain-editor, created for Q3 based games,
but you can use it as hightmap editor for Warzone, see my screens below.

There are some tutorials over the net, but if you need help just ask me.

Download:
http://www.webalice.it/bancala/files_easygen.htm
there are also video tutorials in german.

One thing, you have to set the map size -1 in easy gen, as you want in WZ,
for example if you want 128x128 wz map you have set the size as 127x127 in easygen,
or you have to resize the exported hightmap.

I Just use the GIMP as I can do gradiants easily in it but something that does straight lines and curves better than having to do them manualy would be nice.

The benefit of EasyGen is, that you can see your hightmap "live" in 3D.
Also you can texture it, to have a kind of map-preview.

You can arrange your draft hightmap in any paint-software, import it in easygen, than work on the details in easygen.
Espacially good for Mountain chains etc. ;)

EasyGen is simple, easy to lern, fast and VERY STABLE ;)
It has very nice "smooth" function".

I think you know this problem:
you have imported your painted heightmap in the worldeditor and in some places,
you have really hard edges, in places, where differents heights come close together.
And now you have to smooth it manually in the world editor,
what is very annoying job, because the editor do not offer any usable smoothing operation.

I did it this way:

1. I have exported my actually hightmap from world-editor
2. imported it in easygen (which automatic set all needed parameters!, isn't this a dream? ;) )
3. then used the smooth modifier (see screens below) in the problem-areas.
4. then exported the modified hightmap from easygen (and converted to png)
5. Imported the modified hightmap in world-editor and see the difference!

All this work did cost me about 5 minutes!

Sure, you can try to use a blur-brush in your paint-application, but this way you never know, how it looks in editor.

------------>

* Excellent work !

* That's always been an issue for me.

* I'm dragging my feet a little right now on a CAM map project called "Crash" where I'm having to
do tons of time-consuming work on manually smoothing these "hard-edges"... (i'm also making them
cliff-face trenches just to reduce the tedium).

* Your tips (and this app you recommended) will save me tons of tedious work in the
future. Thanks a bunch. :)
