I did these a while ago, so I decided to release them as a mod.
The mod replaces all VTOL propulsions with helicopter propulsions. The change is purely graphical.

I got inspired to do 500f3a8aec96d4eb1dca3db69eb91d801b160496
, which adds Jorzi's new helicopter models, and also adds generalized support for movement and standing still animation effects, rather than the old hardcoded support for movement animation support for VTOL only. This is done by extending bodypropulsion.ini with new optional fields. The first new field is for movement animation effect, the second for standing still animation effect (not used by anything yet, but might be a good idea to add something for the helicopter wings here). I did not add any research path to the helicopter model, so the only way to see it is through 'give all' cheat. It is missing a research icon, and I think it needs its own movemen type.

They are in master/3.2 already. There is no way to research them, but can be enabled with mods.

Also I've licensed them as CC0, i.e. public domain, so that anyone can utilize them how they see fit without permission

Jorzi, any chance you could add a rotors standing still 'effect'? (Support for standing still effects added recently in master.) Currently, when the droid is not moving, its rotor blades are not shown...

You mean like a .pie file? I originally made the rotors as solid 3d meshes but then I rendered them with motion blur, so I could probably get the original rotor models exported.
