Old and New player Multiplayer question

Hi I was looking for a game to play and luckily found this site and am excited to see people are still working on the game. I have played this game long ago and love it and remember playing online using Gamespy I think. I just am wondering how exactly Multiplayer is done now and if it is somewhat easy to get a game going. I noticed it centers around IRC but any details would be nice.
so I guess I answered my own question just by installing and playing lol
