Just a newbie here so be gentle
I am running the older version 2.3.9 Oct 2011 (I know, old and busted) and when my host a game my friend gets a message "incompatable" but he is running the same version as I am.
Also, I tried to host a game and others asked something about "mod map please?"

Obviously there is something I am doing wrong or a step I missed during the installation.
Forgive me if it is a "UBF" (user brain failure)

Did either of you make any changes to base.wz or mp.wz? Are either of you running any mods (which are listed at the very top part of the title screen)?

No, fresh install from the site with no mods or changes.

There are some map-mods in circulation causing problems. I suggest you delete all auto-downloaded maps from your maps folder and downoad the maps you want to host on from the addons section of the forum.
