Re: Game crashes after 40-60min

Post by stiv »

I have tried 179.44 and 180.70 Drivers. I can not believe, that 2 Driver Versions are corrupted. From my point of view, there is something wrong with warzone ;( Maybe wrong initialized pointers?
The suggestion is not that the drivers are corrupt, but that there is a bug in the operating system/driver/video adaptor combination. If the problem was bad pointers, more people would be seeing it.

A couple suggestions:

On Vista, turn off Aero. It does not play well with OpenGL applications.

Try running in a standard resolution like 800x600

Playing with WZ's texture size may help.

location ffffff, i can not read this file, cause i do not know what everything means, but looks for me like an overflow?
Your gfx drivers are crashing. Gfx drivers shouldn't crash.
and it ends here.

perhaps a fault in the OS wich accesses the driver in a way that causes it to crash

I have found the Problem!!! =)

Warzone makes my Notebook go hot. I opened my Notebook and have apart screwed it. There was a nasty dust layer (very ugly...) between heatpipe and the fan. After that operation warzone did not crash again. Maybe Warzone is a little bit more sensitive, than other games :) But the game did not crash again till yet =)

If it crash, i will report it here =) But i am full of hope, that it will not!

So cool down your systems, it works =)

I have encountered a random crash bug several times over the last couple of days. Sometimes there has been an assert failiure popup, but I was unable to find a crashdump. This is the most recent crash report, not sure of the exact circumstances as i was away from the computer while the game was running for about 3 minutes and then it was back to the desktop with a message about the display driver crashing when I got back.

This issue cannot be due to overheating as there has never been any increased fan activity or warming of my computer, it has also occured in many non processor intensive areas of the game, and I was able to play all the way through the game on a much slower computer a year or 2 ago.

I also highly doubt that the crash is due to display drivers, as there has been no problem with anything else, just many times with WZ 2100.

Crash Dump:

The game was running at high res, i'll see if i can get another crash report, then turn down the res and then see if further crashing occurs.

Really good work on the game, adding the FMVs back in gives it a lot more character. Hope you can stabilise this release soon, it'll certainly be the best yet!

EDIT: got another crash after ~20 mins play. No signs of overheating and was during a period of decreased activity. Crashdump was not updated however. I'll change the res and see if it occurs again.

EDIT2: Have changed the res down from 1600x to 1200x, and I havent had a crash for about 30 mins. Haven't actually been in combat during that time, but it might have done the trick. I'll see if once I do some fighting it resists crashing...

Ok, after playing on some more the same crash occured after about 20-30 minutes, so it looks like changing the resolution down didnt really help. The .rpt file didnt update, does it need to be manually deleted each time or does it only manage to write it sometimes?

We're not sure. It does not need to be deleted, though. Right click it and uncheck "Read-only", just to be sure.

I have been getting this "video driver stopped responding" crash for a long time now ( at least 6 months or so ) on many different builds of WZ.
I keep all my stuff updated all the time. I check for updates weekly. (windows, and all hardware drivers)
I have had this exact same problem on more than 1 system. It has happened on XP as well as Vista too.
I tried all the suggestions offered and it still does it. (lower res, no shadows, no Aero in vista)
I get the same crash in campaign as well as skirmishes.
Sometimes it can go for hours without a crash or it can happen within minutes.
I am frustrated over this because I really like this game and I really like what you all have done with it.
My system specs are :
AMD Athlon x2 6000+ dual core
Asus M2N-MX SE Plus MB
4 Gb OCZ DDR2 800mh Fatal1ty RAM
MSI N9600GT T2D512 Video
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit (up to date)

Here is the RPT file from my warzone folder
warzone2100.RPT
(3.78 KiB) Downloaded 240 times
Thank you for your time.

The system that you list is more than capable of playing wz fine.
"video driver stopped responding" is a driver bug, and it can also be a hardware issue (think heat).

If you system is stable, and you can check by running memtest from http://www.memtest86.com/ (free) let it run overnight! There should be *no* errors!
Then run something like OCCT (http://www.ocbase.com/perestroika_en/index.php?Download) (free) and let that run for at least 30 mins.
And finally, run something like 3dMark06 (http://www.futuremark.com/benchmarks/3dmark06/download/) and make it run in a loop *while* OCCT is running. You don't care about the speed, you are testing your hardware. You should have 0 errors in all these tests.

If all those pass, then your system is stable.

Then you can continue on troubleshooting by using different drivers for the vid card... and so on.
and it ends here.

I would blame "Data Execution Prevention" (DEP), respective an incompatible driver.
You are using 4GB RAM on an 32bit OS. With 32bit only 4GB of RAM could be adressed, including RAM of peripherial advices like graphicscard.

Since your processor supports 64bit (and 4GB RAM were installed) some drivers possibly believe they got 64bit adresses and try to execute on such adresses. Due to the fact that 32bit windows uses 32bit adresses this results in wrong adresses and it accesses locked RAM. So DEP rightfully closes programs that try to access these adresses without permission, or other driver related errors occur.
The report file shows, that it can't create some objects in graphicsRAM but the adress it like to write on is far away from (if i read it aright).

possible solutions:
newest drivers
64bit OS (best time to try Windows 7 is now, Vista Home is crappy)
less RAM (max 3,5GB + 512MB RAM of graphicscard = 4GB)
Windows 7 RC / Athlon 64 X2 / NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT

I have DEP disabled.
I have the latest drivers (Nvidia)
I have 2 120mm Rosewill fans in the side panel of my tower.(one blows directly on the vid card)
I also have an Antec video card cooler installed.
I have a Zalman CNPS9700 CPU cooler installed. ( It is huge and solid copper with a mirror polished contact surface and Artic Alumina Ceramic Polysynthetic Thermal compound that I also redid the Vid card heatsink with) (liquid coolers still cost too much)
** I had a system burst into flames literally a few years ago, so I am very particular about my cooling now **
Memory has OCZ heatsinks installed.
I am going to run the tests Buginator suggested but I kinda doubt that is the problem. (NONE of my other games ever crash)
As far as the video drivers, I update them often, so I have already tried several different versions of them.
BTW, thanks for the quick responses. Another thing I like about this game and all who are working to make it better :)
